Motivation Monday, Veterans Day Tuesday & Soul Food Friday for Nov 14th 2014 – “What you tolerate you teach.”

Happy Soul Food Friday!

“To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research.”

“OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY.”

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the Legion,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his buddies;
They were heroes, every one.

And ‘tho sometimes to his neighbors
His tales became a joke,
All his buddies listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we’ll hear his tales no longer,
For ol’ Joe has passed away,
And the world’s a little poorer
For a Veteran died today.

He won’t be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won’t note his passing,
‘Tho a Veteran died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young,
But the passing of a Veteran
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some one who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician’s stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Veteran,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some handy cop-out,
With his ever-waffling stand?

Or would you want a Veteran
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Veteran,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Veteran,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his likes again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Veteran’s part,
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he’s here to hear the praise,
Then at least let’s give him homage
At the ending of his days.

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
“OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING,
A VETERAN DIED TODAY.”

Best of the Best with Steven Wright

If you’re not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he’s the famous erudite (comic) scientist who once said:

“I woke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates.”

… He sees things differently than most of us.

Here are some of his gems:

1 – I’d kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.

2 – Borrow money from pessimists – they don’t expect it back.

3 – Half the people you know are below average.

4 – 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.

6 – A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.

7 – A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.

8 – If you want the rainbow, you have got to put up with the rain.

9 – All those who believe in psycho kinesis, raise my hand.

10 – The early bird may get the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese.

11 – I almost had a psychic girlfriend … But she left me before we met.

12 – OK, so what’s the speed of dark?

13 – How do you tell when you’re out of invisible ink?

14 – If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

15 – Depression is merely anger without enthusiasm.

16 – When everything is coming your way, you’re in the wrong lane.

17 – Ambition is a poor excuse for not having enough sense to be lazy.

18 -Hard work pays off in the future; laziness pays off now.

19 – I intend to live forever… So far, so good.

21 – Eagles may soar, but weasels don’t get sucked into jet engines.

22 – What happens if you get scared half to death twice?

23 – My mechanic told me, “I couldn’t repair your brakes, so I made your horn louder.”

24 – Why do psychics have to ask you for your name.

25 – If at first you don’t succeed, destroy all evidence that you tried.

26 – A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.

27 – Experience is something you don’t get until just after you need it.

28 – The hardness of the butter is proportional to the softness of the bread.

29 – To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is            research.

30 – The problem with the gene pool is that there is no lifeguard

31 – The sooner you fall behind, the more time you’ll have to catch up.

32 – The colder the x-ray table, the more of your body is required to be on it.

33 – Everyone has a photographic memory; some just don’t have film.

34 – If at first you don’t succeed, skydiving is not for you.

And the all-time favorite

35 – If your car could travel at the speed of light would your headlights work?

Teaching Student Athletes Competence AND Character

I am privileged to serve on the Advisory Board of Pitch It Forward. Here was a great Motivational Monday post from this week with two compelling lessons for all of us…

As many of you begin CIF playoffs this week, I want to share with you a link to something that occurred in the Oregon-Utah football game on Saturday. What you will observe is Kaelin Clay, a Utah player, prematurely celebrating a touchdown he had not yet scored, dropping the ball a yard outside the end-zone, from which point the University of Oregon Ducks returned Clay’s fumble 99 yards for at least a 12-point scoring swing. Leaders recognize that every play counts and every play demands your full effort. Leadership has no room for celebrating before the game is over. Continue to work hard, play hard, demand the most of yourselves and your teammates, and listen to and respect your coaches. You will all be leaders if you follow that approach.

On an entirely different note, the UT San Diego published the attached very powerful editorial in Sunday’s paper entitled “The sad rise of casual partisan hatred.” While politically oriented, this editorial is applicable to virtually any situation you encounter today. It references a study conducted by Stanford University and Princeton University professors and states that “Americans increasingly dislike people and groups on the other side of the political divide and face no social repercussions for the open expression of these attitudes.” Where this article applies to you is in the second to last paragraph where the editorial board states “And too many people who should know better don’t push back and accept this casual hatred as the new behavioral norm.” I place everyone in Pitch it Forward in the category of those who know better. Let’s not let casual hatred into our lives. Remember the lesson from session one:  “What you tolerate you teach.”

WHAT IF…the most important factor to your happiness is not what you might think?

RESEARCH SAYS: A recent study reveals that the happiest people (10 on a 10 point scale) did not report the highest levels of income and education. That’s right. 10s earned significantly less money and had lower educational achievements than their moderately happy counterparts (8 or 9 on the 10-point scale). What set the happiest individuals apart from the rest was they engaged more often in volunteer activities and maintained more stable relationships.

Service and love. That’s what really matters.

TRY THIS: Volunteer for a cause that you are passionate about for at least 3 hours this week. Better yet, do it with someone you love. How did it make you feel?

What is the Most Important Thing People Should Know About You:

How to Live Happy Life- Life According to Sam

Sam Berns a Junior at Foxboro High School in Foxboro, Massachusetts, achieved highest honors and was a percussion section leader in the high school marching band. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. Sam was diagnosed with Progeria, a rare, rapid aging disease, at the age of 2. He is featured in the documentary Life According to Sam.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/11/us/progeria-sam-berns-dies/

Sadly, Sam passed away earlier this year but his positive spirit lives on…

Increase your K.A.S.H.=>Increase your Influence:

As an elite leader in life, you are in a great position to influence others in a very positive manner. The more you are able to increase and improve your knowledge, attitudes, skills and habitsthe more influence you will have and the bigger impact you will make.

K.A.S.H.=>Knowledge/Attitude/Skills/Habits.

Knowledge is Potential Power…especially when it is applied and you are in a leadership role.

The more you know, the more you can help people grow. Great leaders are great learners and students first and foremost. They are constantly seeking to increase their knowledge base and improve themselves. You might say they are on a…

Quest To Be Their Best!

Knowledge of yourself first and foremost is key to your success. In fact, one of my favorite quotes is by an ancient Chinese philosopher by the name of Lao-Tzu and goes…

“Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength, mastering yourself is true power.”

If you want to increase your personal power, you also need to work on attitude. We all do.

Attitudes are always caught before they can ever be taught. Any parent knows this firsthand, you rarely teach a child to have a good attitude. Good or bad, kids tend to model what they see and hear. We have all been programmed over time and our attitudes are the sum total of this programming.

Great leaders know that they must be always be a model of excellence for anyone that follows their lead. You must always demonstrate the attitude you hope to spread. Great leaders also know that before they can ever lead anyone else they must first lead themselves.

A leader knows that developing a great attitude requires daily effort and commitment. Just as you bath your body each and every day (I hope!), you need to bath your attitude.

A leaders impact and influence is always greater when they are consistent with their own attitudes, emotions and behavior patterns. This is why great leaders are congruent, consistent, and compelling. They truly walk their talk.

“Repetition is the Mother of Skill”  –Tony Robbins

______________________________________________________________

It’s been said that most of us are only one or two skills away from doubling our effectiveness and the results we are capable of achieving. I have talked before about the “Winning Edge Concept” that Brain Tracy espouses and or the power of 212 degrees. That is at 211 degrees water is hot but at 212 it boils and boiling water creates steam which creates energy, power, and ultimately great leverage.

What skills could make you a better leader? A better parent? A better teacher? A better boss or team leader? A better spouse or friend?

Once you identify what skills you need to develop, you can start to make the necessary changes to that lead to explosive and aggressive progress… You must also become determined and driven to develop those skills. One of the best ways to develop any skill is to study someone that already has that skill or what is called “modeling” in the peak performance industry.

If you want to learn any skill, find a qualified and capable instructor who not only knows how to do the skill but importantly how to teach it. Unfortunately the two don’t always go hand in hand. If they did, every person who had ever read a self-help book would be operating at a higher level. My best advice is to find a mentor or life coach that has already been there…done that.

Where there is a will…there is always a way. If you want something badly enough and you think about how to get it, you’ll find the answer and you’ll begin to attract the people and resources that will help you develop the skills you need to succeed. There is more great news! Once you learn, grow, and share your newly acquired skills, you can give more. It gets even better as you can’t out give the universe! If you don’t believe me try it!

Habits we train…are habits we train. Experts agree that 95% of what we do every day is based on habits. We are all creatures of habit.

The good news is we can consciously decide to develop new and better habits. That’s not to say that it is going to be easy, but it is simple.

Habits are developed just like any skill…through repetition. Do it over and over again and soon enough it will stick. This is one of the reasons that I repeat myselfJ.

It takes 21 days to a new habit. Maybe you want to develop the habit of a half hour of daily reading of inspirational materials. The key to making it become a habit is to set a time every day for reading and then just do it as the Nike slogan goes. However, if you want to reach mastery level, it will take on average 10,000 focused hours of practice and then some.

Simple isn’t it? Yes, but not always easy to do.

Like anything we learn about developing habits of successful achievement, we need to be very consistent and do it over and over again, with enthusiasm, until it becomes habit. Remember, have the energy and enthusiasm and be eager and excited to excel. What could be better than the journey of self-discovery, self-improvement, and heightened awareness as you become the person you were designed to be.

Set the tone…be the Model of Excellence every day in every way!

Increase your K.A.S.H.=>Increase your Influence!

With Gratitude Always!

Halloween Factoids:

With Halloween upon us, I thought I would share some interesting facts about America’s favorite spooky holiday. 🙂

In 1584, after French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America, he reported finding “gros melons.” The name was translated into English as “pompions,” which has since evolved into the modern “pumpkin.”

The British and Americans really love their pumpkins – 18,952 tons of the stuff are sold in the UK and US during Halloween season. That’s enough pumpkins to make 41 million pumpkin pies.

The largest pumpkin pie ever baked was in 2005 and weighed 2,020 pounds.

Pumpkins have been grown in North America for five thousand years. They are indigenous to the western hemisphere.

Pumpkin seeds should be planted between the last week of May and the middle of June. They take between 90 and 120 days to grow and are picked in October when they are bright orange in color. Their seeds can be saved to grow new pumpkins the next year.

On October 31st this year it is estimated that some 41 million ghosts, ghouls, superheroes, witches, princesses, and presidents will be going from door to door in the US looking for enough candy to make it through until Christmas (or at least Thanksgiving). In fact consumers are projected to spend $75.03 per person, with an average of $27.85 on costumes and $22.37 on candy according to the National Retail Federation.

According to the National Confectioners Association candy sales are expected to reach $2.5 billion in sales across the US. The study shows that chocolate is the favorite Halloween candy, followed closely by candy corn (more than 35 million pounds are produced each year). It is now estimated that more than twice as much chocolate is sold for Halloween as for Valentine’s Day, with 90 million pounds of chocolate sold during the week running up to Halloween.

86 percent of Americans buy candy during the Halloween season.

Most people know orange and black are traditional Halloween colors, but might not know why: Orange represents the fall harvest and black represents the darkness associated with death of summer.

Hope everyone gets more treats than tricks, and has a happy and safe Halloween!

Thrive with A.L.O.H.A. with Dr. Paul Pearsall:

There’s a woman I met many years ago who’s a perfect example of someone who has discovered the secret of invincibility. In Hawaii, we call her Tutu Mama. She was a 100-year-old Hawaiian lady who just passed away.

I will never forget her, because she taught me much about the thriving character. This is a woman who knew terrible poverty; hid under the bed during Pearl Harbor here in Hawaii while the bombs destroyed everything around her. People she loved, killed. She saw it all and had every reason to be angry, resentful, and broken, but she was not. I never saw her without a smile.

And I thought I’d share with you something that I’ve almost memorized in my heart, because she sat with me a while ago. She was the lady who gave me my Hawaiian name, Ka’ikena. It means person charged with sharing the vision. I remember when she gave me the name, because I asked her, “Tutu, you suffered so. How can you be so happy, so giving, so loving? How can you laugh so easily? How can you be so strong when so many bad things have happened?”

She looked at me, smiled, took a hold of my ear and tugged on it playfully and laughed. “Poor Ka’ikena,” she said. “You have so much to learn. Let me teach you a simple formula for what you call thriving in your own science research, for we have known for centuries what thriving is. I’ll tell you how I do it.

It’s the words of Aloha, A-L-O-H-A.

‘A’ stands for the word Ahonui. That’s persistent patience. Wait; be patient. That brings happiness. Don’t be in such a hurry. The world is such a fast-paced place. I find my joy in just sitting, waiting, and listening.” Ahonui, patience expressed with perseverance. Are you a patient person?

…Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from email. Patience! You’re not that important. I am so tired of hearing these answering machines. “Hi, I’m not here, but your call is very important to me.” Sure it’s important to you. Then why the hell aren’t you there if it’s so important!

My answering machine says this. “Hello.” (I then include a phrase in Hawaiian). And then they usually hang up. Or, the next question. “This is not an answering machine; this is a questioning machine. It asks, What do you want? Which is a very important existential question. So reflect carefully before responding.” What I hear, usually hear, is, that’s it, click, it’s gone. That gets rid of a lot of unwanted calls.

I’m so sick of cell phones going off and buzzers going off and beepers in people’s pockets, buzzing, buzzz… That’s crazy. Very crazy. I was in the airport the other day and a guy next to me was saying, “When I get home I am going to make love to you.” I thought he was talking to me. He was talking to his wife on the phone. What’s the matter with this man?

So please, people, pick on these people. Don’t be a hyper-croniac. Are you a re-button-izer? How many people here push elevator buttons that are already lit? That’s stupid! I saw you guys the other night. You walk up to the elevator, they’re both lit, 10 people are standing there, you go in front and go pghgh, There, I am the top producer. Ha ha! I will push this elevator… Man. Have you seen the elevator button that says, close door? I spoke to the Otis Elevator company. That is a placebo. That button doesn’t work. It’s there to quiet you down so you can… push it. Crazy. Now the cynics are going to go out in the elevator, let me just test what he said, cause I don’t believe it, okay.

Are you a lane counter? How many people here count the number of items in a person’s grocery cart in the express lane to be sure it belongs there? That’s sick! Very sick. Are you a lane leaper? Do you see several lines and you tell people, “I’m in all of these. I’m in any one of these.” Very sick. Or you go to work and you’ve been at that traffic light every day of your life, and you think it’s broken so you keep going, come on. phghghg. Try to move it. Or do you get in buffet lines, and are you a pelvic pusher? Do you do this? “Come on, lady. Come on.” Or escalator hopper, hopping down escalators, they’re not fast enough for me. I’ve got to get down here faster than this. I see people on airplanes, the plane’s coming in and they’re already standing up bent over like this waiting to get off. What is that about? Why don’t you set your okole down and count quarters or something. Now you’re all going to be more patient, right?

So never forget the first “A” in Aloha, Ahonui, persistent patience. That will help you thrive.

She said, “You also ask how I stay so happy and smile so often. It’s because of the second letter, ‘L,’ the second word: Lo Kahi. Lo Kahi means harmonious connection.” It means staying connected not only with your family, but with your ancestors, the land, and a higher power, and being aware of that connection every day.

“Then there’s the ‘O,’ Ka’ikena, Olu’olu. That means pleasantly agreeable.” We have to stop fighting. We have to stop the arguing, the cynical negativity. What’s happened to us? Please remember; it’s very important to choose peace over always trying to be right.

“Then comes the ‘H’ in Aloha, A-L-O-H, Ha’aha’a. That means humbly modest. I think you modern people are too concerned with your self-esteem.” What about other regards? What about realizing that it’s important sometimes just to shut up and learn from others, not to always be assertive, not always try to get your way, not to be so demanding? Have a good sense of humor; laugh. Never forget laughter.

Now you know the “A,” the “L,” the “O”, and the “H.”

“Now, Ka’ikena,” she said to me, “Never forget Akahai; that means gentle, tender kindness. When you walk, when you talk, when you listen, when you look at a child, when you look at an older person, do you look with kindness? Do you feel kindness? Therein I find my strength. I find it in Aloha.

“Good Luck Mr. Gorsky”:

IN CASE YOU DIDN’T ALREADY KNOW THIS LITTLE TIDBIT OF TRIVIA…………..

ON JULY 20, 1969, AS COMMANDER OF THE APOLLO 11 LUNAR MODULE, NEIL ARMSTRONG WAS THE FIRST PERSON TO SET FOOT ON THE MOON.

HIS FIRST WORDS AFTER STEPPING ON THE MOON, “THAT’S ONE SMALL STEP FOR MAN, ONE GIANT LEAP FOR MANKIND,” WERE TELEVISED TO EARTH AND HEARD BY MILLIONS.

BUT, JUST BEFORE HE RE-ENTERED THE LANDER, HE MADE THE ENIGMATIC REMARK

“GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY.”

MANY PEOPLE AT NASA THOUGHT IT WAS A CASUAL REMARK CONCERNING SOME RIVAL SOVIET COSMONAUT. HOWEVER, UPON CHECKING, THERE WAS NO GORSKY IN EITHER THE RUSSIAN OR AMERICAN SPACE PROGRAMS .

OVER THE YEARS, MANY PEOPLE QUESTIONED ARMSTRONG AS TO WHAT THE ‘GOOD LUCK, MR. GORSKY’ STATEMENT MEANT, BUT ARMSTRONG ALWAYS JUST SMILED.

ON JULY 5, 1995, IN TAMPA BAY, FLORIDA , WHILE ANSWERING QUESTIONS FOLLOWING A SPEECH, A REPORTER BROUGHT UP THE 26-YEAR-OLD QUESTION ABOUT Mr. Gorsky TO ARMSTRONG.

THIS TIME HE FINALLY RESPONDED BECAUSE HIS MR. GORSKY HAD JUST DIED, SO NEIL ARMSTRONG FELT HE COULD NOW ANSWER THE QUESTION.

HERE IS THE ANSWER TO “WHO WAS MR. GORSKY”:

IN 1938, WHEN HE WAS A KID IN A SMALL MID-WESTERN TOWN, HE WAS PLAYING BASEBALL WITH A FRIEND IN THE BACKYARD.

HIS FRIEND HIT THE BALL, WHICH LANDED IN HIS NEIGHBOR’S YARD BY THEIR BEDROOM WINDOW.

HIS NEIGHBORS WERE MR. AND MRS. GORSKY.

AS HE LEANED DOWN TO PICK UP THE BALL, YOUNG ARMSTRONG HEARD

MRS. GORSKY SHOUTING AT MR. GORSKY,

“SEX!  YOU WANT SEX?!

YOU’LL GET SEX WHEN THE KID NEXT DOOR WALKS ON THE MOON!”

Be the Change You Want To See in Your Network:

In the spirit of “be the change you want to see in your network”

Believe it or not, it has been 33 years and counting- teaching traditional martial arts and the wisdom traditions here at UC San Diego

From more than three decades, we have strived to add the whole person education to the unique UCSD mix- fostering character, confidence AND competence into the UC San Diego experience.

Today, students that began their martial arts journey in our classes are themselves teaching in several cities & universities across the globe with black belts of their own passing on the tradition.

We are a small but mighty group, less interested in quantity but more in developing quality human beings that better our world!

As we start yet another Fall quarter, I thought I would get the word out to help cultivate healthy habits to offset the stress inherent in the college/life experience with the wellness benefits of energizing mind, body and spirit.

As they say …your mission is my mission!

Get up Stand Up- Sitting is the New Smoking…

Muscle Inactivity Behind the Health Risks of Excess Sitting
Worse cholesterol values linked with greater muscle idle time, even in exercisers.

sittingnewsmoking

You’ve probably heard that excessive sitting is considered an independent risk factor for many chronic conditions, including heart disease. As we put it last year, sitting is the new smoking. You’ve probably also heard that the link between too much sitting and worse health is true even for people who work out regularly.

What you may not have heard is what exactly makes sitting so dangerous. The answer may be too much muscle inactivity, suggests new research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

Finnish researchers had 150 adults wear shorts that measured muscle activity in their thighs and hamstrings while the participants went about typical weekdays. Muscles were said to be inactive if they registered lower electromyographic amplitude than when standing still. Moderate to vigorous activity was defined as producing an amplitude greater than when walking at a pace of 5 kilometers per hour.

Even though the participants were fit and active, their hamstrings and thighs were, on average, inactive for 65 percent of their waking days. That is, for almost two-thirds of the time the participants were awake, some of the largest muscles in their body were less active than if they were standing still.

The researchers then divided the participants into four groups, from lowest to highest amount of muscle inactivity. Compared to those with the least amount of inactivity (55 percent or less of the time), those with the most muscle inactivity (at least 74 percent of the time) had significantly worse HDL cholesterol and triglyceride readings. This was true independent of the amount of time spent in the study’s definition of moderate to vigorous physical activity.

One common piece of advice is to take frequent breaks from sitting. This study offers insight into an easy way to do so: Standing from a sitting position produced enough muscle activity in the thighs to get above the threshold found to be linked to worse cholesterol readings.

“These results give further support for the message ‘stand up, sit less, move more’ to promote metabolic health as a complement to current exercise guidelines,” the researchers wrote.

Fine! Don’t exercise and risk letting sleeping dogs lie…

WALKING  THE DOG:
A woman  was flying  from Seattle to San  Francisco.  Unexpectedly, the plane was  diverted  to Sacramento along  the way.

The  flight attendant explained that there would be a  delay, and if the passengers wanted to get off  the aircraft the plane would re-board in 50  minutes..

Everybody  got off the plane except one lady who was  blind.

A man had  noticed her as he walked by and could tell the  lady was blind because her guide dog lay quietly  underneath the seats in front of her throughout  the entire  flight.

He could  also tell she had flown this very flight before  because the pilot approached her,  and
Calling her by  name, said, “Kathy, we are  in Sacramento for almost an  hour. Would you like to get off and stretch your  legs?”

The  blind lady said, “No  thanks, but maybe Buddy would like  to stretch his  legs.”

Picture  this

All the  people in the gate area came to a complete  standstill when they looked up and saw the pilot  walk off the plane with a guide dog for the  blind!  Even worse, the pilot was wearing  sunglasses !

People scattered.  They  not only tried to change planes, but they were  trying to change airlines!

True  story…..
Have a great  day and  remember….

  • The Story of and Song about Rose
  • “Best and Most Memorable Lines Ever.”

  • Why God Gave Us Puppies!

Hi Handsome. My name is Rose…

The  first day of school our professor introduced  himself and challenged us

to get to know someone  we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around

when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned around to find a wrinkled,  little old lady beaming up at me with a

smile  that lit up her entire being..

She said,  ‘Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven  years old. Can I

give you a hug?’

I  laughed and enthusiastically responded, ‘Of  course you may!’ and she

gave me a giant  squeeze..

‘Why are you in college at  such a young, innocent age?’ I asked.

She jokingly replied, ‘I’m here to meet  a rich husband, get married, and

have a couple  of kids…’

‘No seriously,’ I asked. I  was curious what may have motivated her to be

taking on this challenge at her age.

‘I  always dreamed of having a college education and  now I’m getting one!’

she told me.

After  class we walked to the student union building  and shared a chocolate

milkshake.

We  became instant friends. Every day for the next  three months we would

leave class together and  talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening

to this ‘time machine’ as she shared her wisdom  and experience with me..

Over the course  of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she  easily made

friends wherever she went. She loved  to dress up and she reveled in the

attention  bestowed upon her from the other students. She  was living it up.

At the end of the  semester we invited Rose to speak at our  football

banquet. I’ll never forget what she  taught us. She was introduced and

stepped up to  the podium. As she began to deliver her

prepared  speech, she dropped her three by five cards on  the floor.

Frustrated  and a little embarrassed she leaned into the  microphone and

simply said, ‘I’m sorry I’m so  jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this

whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech  back in order so let me

just tell you what I  know.’

As we laughed she cleared her  throat and began, ‘ We do not stop playing

because we are old; we grow old because we stop  playing.

There are only four secrets to  staying young, being happy, and achieving

success. You have to laugh and find humor every  day. You’ve got to have a

dream. When you lose  your dreams, you die.

We have so many  people walking around who are dead and don’t  even know it!

There is a huge difference  between growing older and growing up.

If  you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for  one full year and don’t

do one productive thing,  you will turn twenty years old. If I am

eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a  year and never do anything I

will turn  eighty-eight.

Anybody! Can grow older.  That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea

is to grow up by always finding opportunity  in change. Have no regrets.

The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but  rather for things

we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.

She concluded her speech by courageously  singing ‘The Rose.’

She challenged each  of us to study the lyrics and live them out in  our

daily lives. At the year’s end Rose finished  the college degree she had

begun all those  months ago.

One week after graduation  Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

Over  two thousand college students attended her  funeral in tribute to the

wonderful woman who  taught by example that it’s never too late to be all

you can possibly be.

When you finish  reading this, please send this peaceful word of  advice to

your friends and family, they’ll  really enjoy it!

These words have been passed along in loving memory of ROSE.

REMEMBER, GROWING OLDER IS MANDATORY.  GROWING UP IS OPTIONAL.

We make a living by what  we get. We make a Life by what we give.

God promises a safe landing, not a calm  passage. If God brings you to it, He will bring  you through it.

‘Good friends are like stars…..  ….You don’t always see them, but you know they  are always  there.’

Speaking of the Rose…

Delta 15: The Good News. . .

Here is an amazing true story from a flight attendant on Delta Flight 15, written following 9-11………..

On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, we were about 5 hours out of Frankfurt, flying over the North Atlantic on our way to Atlanta.

All of a sudden the curtains parted and I was told to go to the cockpit, immediately, to see the captain. As soon as I got there I noticed that the crew had that “All Business” look on their faces. The captain handed me a printed message. It was from Delta’s main office in Atlanta and simply read, “All airways over the Continental United

States are closed to commercial air traffic. Land ASAP at the nearest airport. Advise your destination.”

No one said a word about what this could mean. We knew it was a serious situation and we needed to find terra firma quickly. The captain determined that the nearest airport was 400 miles behind us in Gander , New Foundland.

He requested approval for a route change from the Canadian traffic controller and approval was granted immediately — no questions asked. We found out later, of course, why there was no hesitation in approving our request.

While the flight crew prepared the airplane for landing, another message arrived from Atlanta telling us about some terrorist activity in the New York area. A few minutes later word came in about the hijackings.

We decided to LIE to the passengers while we were still in the air. We told them the plane had a simple instrument problem and that we needed to land at the nearest airport in Gander , New Foundland, to have it checked out.

We promised to give more information after landing in Gander .  There was much grumbling among the passengers, but that’s nothing new!  Forty minutes later, we landed in Gander . Local time at Gander was 12:30 PM! …. that’s 11:00 AM EST.

There were already about 20 other airplanes on the ground from all over the world that had taken this detour on their way to the U.S.

After we parked on the ramp, the captain made the following announcement: “Ladies and gentlemen, you must be wondering if all these airplanes around us have the same instrument problem as we have.  The reality is that we are here for another reason.” Then he went on to explain the little bit we knew about the situation in the U.S.

There were loud gasps and stares of disbelief. The captain informed passengers that Ground control in Gander told us to stay put.

The Canadian Government was in charge of our situation and no one was allowed to get off the aircraft. No one on the ground was allowed to come near any of the air crafts. Only airport police would come around periodically, look us over and go on to the next airplane. In the next hour or so more planes landed and Gander ended up with 53 airplanes from all over the world, 27 of which were U.S. commercial jets.

Meanwhile, bits of news started to come in over the aircraft radio and for the first time we learned that airplanes were flown into the World Trade Center in New York and into the Pentagon in DC. People were trying to use their cell phones, but were unable to connect due to a different cell system in Canada . Some did get through, but were

only able to get to the Canadian operator who would tell them that the lines to the U.S. were either blocked or jammed.

Sometime in the evening the news filtered to us that the World Trade Center buildings had collapsed and that a fourth hijacking had resulted in a crash. By now the passengers were emotionally and physically exhausted, not to mention frightened, but everyone stayed amazingly calm. We had only to look out the window at the 52 other stranded aircraft to realize that we were not the only ones in this predicament.

We had been told earlier that they would be allowing people off the planes one plane at a time. At 6 PM, Gander airport told us that our turn to deplane would be 11 am the next morning. Passengers were not happy, but they simply resigned themselves to this news without much noise and started to prepare themselves to spend the night on the airplane.

Gander had promised us medical attention, if needed, water, and lavatory servicing. And they were true to their word.  Fortunately we had no medical situations to worry about. We did have a young lady who was 33 weeks into her pregnancy. We took REALLY good care of her. The night passed without incident despite the uncomfortable sleeping arrangements.

About 10:30 on the morning of the 12th a convoy of school buses showed up. We got off the plane and were taken to the terminal where we went through Immigration and Customs and then had to register with the Red Cross.

After that we (the crew) were separated from the passengers and were taken in vans to a small hotel. We had no idea where our passengers were going. We learned from the Red Cross that the town of Gander has a population of 10,400 people and they had about 10,500 passengers to take care of from all the airplanes that were forced into

Gander ! We were told to just relax at the hotel and we would be contacted when the U.S. airports opened again, but not to expect that call for a while.

We found out the total scope of the terror back home only after getting to our hotel and turning on the TV, 24 hours after it all started.

Meanwhile, we had lots of time on our hands and found that the people of Gander were extremely friendly. They started calling us the “plane people.” We enjoyed their hospitality, explored the town of Gander and ended up having a pretty good time.

Two days later, we got that call and were taken back to the Gander airport. Back on the plane, we were reunited with the passengers and found out what they had been doing for the past two days. What we found out was incredible.

Gander and all the surrounding communities (within MATCH about a 75 Kilometer radius) had closed all high schools, meeting halls, lodges, and any other large gathering places. They converted all these facilities to mass lodging areas for all the stranded travelers.  Some had cots set up, some had mats with sleeping bags and pillows set up.

ALL the high school students were required to volunteer their time to take care of the “guests.” Our 218 passengers ended up in a town called Lewisporte, about 45 kilometers from Gander where they were put up in a high school. If any women wanted to be in a women-only facility, that was arranged. Families were kept together. All the elderly passengers were taken to private homes.

Remember that young pregnant lady? She was put up in a private home right across the street from a 24-hour Urgent Care facility. There was a dentist on call and both male and female nurses remained with the crowd for the duration.

Phone calls and e-mails to the U.S. and around the world were available to everyone once a day. During the day, passengers were offered “Excursion” trips. Some people went on boat cruises of the lakes and harbors. Some went for hikes in the local forests. Local bakeries stayed open to make fresh bread for the guests.

Food was prepared by all the residents and brought to the schools. People were driven to restaurants of their choice and offered wonderful meals. Everyone was given tokens for local laundry mats to wash their clothes, since luggage was still on the aircraft. In other words, every single need was met for those stranded travelers.

Passengers were crying while telling us these stories. Finally, when they were told that U.S. airports had reopened, they were delivered to the airport right on time and without a single passenger missing or late. The local Red Cross had all the information about the whereabouts of each and every passenger and knew which plane they needed to be on and when all the planes were leaving. They coordinated everything beautifully.

It was absolutely incredible.

When passengers came on board, it was like they had been on a cruise.  Everyone knew each other by name. They were swapping stories of their stay, impressing each other with who had the better time. Our flight back to Atlanta looked like a chartered party flight. The crew just stayed out of their way. It was mind-boggling.

Passengers had totally bonded and were calling each other by their first names, exchanging phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses.

And then a very unusual thing happened.

One of our passengers approached me and asked if he could make an announcement over the PA system. We never, ever allow that. But this time was different. I said “of course” and handed him the mike.  He picked up the PA and reminded everyone about what they had just gone through in the last few days. He reminded them of the

hospitality they had received at the hands of total strangers. He continued by saying that he would like to do something in return for the good folks of Lewisporte.

“He said he was going to set up a Trust Fund under the name of DELTA 15 (our flight number). The purpose of the trust fund is to provide college scholarships for the high school students of Lewisporte.  He asked for donations of any amount from his fellow travelers.  When the paper with donations got back to us with the amounts, names,

phone numbers and addresses, the total was for more than $14,000!

“The gentleman, a MD from Virginia , promised to match the donations and to start the administrative work on the scholarship. He also said that he would forward this proposal to Delta Corporate and ask them to donate as well.

As I write this account, the trust fund is at more than $1.5 million and has assisted 134 students in college education.

“I just wanted to share this story because we need good stories right now. It gives me a little bit of hope to know that some people in a faraway place were kind to some strangers who literally dropped in on them.

It reminds me how much good there is in the world.”

“In spite of all the rotten things we see going on in today’s world this story confirms that there are still a lot of good people in the world and when things get bad, they will come forward.

*If this is one of those stories that you feel needs to be shared, please do so…*

Empty Chair

Guinness “Empty Chair” salutes the character of a community as they honor one of their own who is out of sight, but not out of mind. They remind us that a true test of character is what you do when no one’s looking.

LATEST ‘PEW’ News IQ Test:

The test contains 13 straight forward questions, of current events, and it outputs the results in a number of ways. National results indicate that the majority of Americans don’t know what is going on in their country.  Are these the “low information voters” we have been hearing about? It is astonishing that so many people got less than half of the questions right.  The results say that 80% of the voting public are clueless about current events.  That’s pretty scary, but not at all surprising. There are no trick questions in this test — Either you know the answer or you don’t.  It will give you an idea whether or not you are current on your information data base.
