Your Soul Food for the Week of Veteran’s Day & World Kindness Day 2019: Drive All Blames Into One

Teachings for Awakening the Heart in Everyday Life:

11.15.19-2.jpg

Pema Chodron’s Compassion Cards- Teachings for Awakening the Heart in Everyday Life are a fun and thought-provoking card deck drawing from the Root Text of the Seven Points of Training the Mind steeped in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.
Today I pulled the “Drive All Blames Into One” card and here is the commentary for our collective reflection:

Drive All Blames Into One
This is advice on how to work with your fellow beings.
Everyone is looking for someone to blame and therefore aggression and neurosis keep expanding.
Instead, pause and look at what’s happening with you.
When you hold on so tightly to your view of what you did, you get hooked.
Your own self-righteousness causes you to get all worked up and to suffer.
So work on cooling that reactivity rather than escalating it. This approach reduces suffering – yours and everyone else’s…

Why the World is Being Dehumanized:

What Humanism Means to Me, and Why it’s Failing Around the Globe by Umair Haque
When you consider what our grandkids and their grandkids will say about this age, this era, what comes surging to your mind?
I’d say that the wise amongst them might say something like this: “Wow. They were in profound, terrible pain. They were being dehumanized, over and over again. They had to dehumanize one another, just to live.”
But that’s a deeply traumatic experience — to have your personhood, your selfhood, your dignity, purpose, truth, capacity for love, empathy, care, nurturing, taken away from you.

The Challenge- Some unsavory examples of us dehumanizing each other from Immigration to Sexual Harassment, shared below to open our minds and hearts, and remind us of the severity and pervasiveness of our inhumanity to our fellow man

How Immigration Raids In August Have Changed A Small Town In Mississippi:
The community of Morton, Miss., is still dealing with the biggest single-state work site immigration raid in U.S. history. Seven chicken plants were raided and 680 people arrested.

McDonald’s Is Sued Over ‘Systemic Sexual Harassment’ Of Female Workers:
The lawsuit against McDonald’s and its Michigan franchise is the latest allegation of rampant abuse and harassment of female employees at the fast-food chain.
Lawyers representing workers say more than 50 claims and charges of harassment of female employees are pending against McDonald’s in courts and at the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The Opportunity-Some Ways to Redress these Inequities and Indignities- Development Economics, Cultural Intelligence, and Teaching Kids Empathy

Dr. Topher McDougal shares some thoughts on the recent Nobel Prize given to three development economists:
Development economics is the branch of economics that deals with how countries go from being poor to being rich. It is broadly characterized by a belief that, for a number of distinct reasons, economies in the poorest countries may behave differently from those in rich countries – most fundamentally by yielding negative returns on investment, leading to the so-called “poverty trap.” By the turn of the millennium, the field had long been dominated by big theoretical debates: Does development aid break cycles of poverty in poor countries? If so, which sectors should be spurred by bilateral and multilateral grants and lending? Or does development aid generate dependency? Is it a form of neo-Colonial exploitation?

The Importance of Developing Cultural Intelligence:
Cultivating globally mobile, culturally agile citizens now that’s a novel idea

Teaching kids empathy: In Danish schools, it’s … well, it’s a piece of cake:
While researching our book “The Danish Way of Parenting; What the Happiest People in the World Know About Raising Confident, Capable Kids,” the co-authors interviewed numerous teachers and students across Denmark to learn how they incorporate empathy in schools and at home. Notably, in the Danish education system empathy is considered as important as teaching math and literature, and it is woven into the school’s curriculum from pre-school through high school.

On a Lighter Note…

PAY ATTENTION!

AN OLD WOMAN WALKED UP AND TIED HER OLD MULE TO THE HITCHING POST.
AS SHE STOOD THERE, BRUSHING SOME OF THE DUST FROM HER FACE AND CLOTHES, A YOUNG GUNSLINGER STEPPED OUT OF THE SALOON WITH A GUN IN ONE HAND AND A BOTTLE OF WHISKEY IN THE OTHER. THE YOUNG GUNSLINGER LOOKED AT THE OLD WOMAN AND LAUGHED, “HEY OLD WOMAN, HAVE YOU EVER DANCED?”
THE OLD WOMAN LOOKED UP AT THE GUNSLINGER AND SAID, “NO,… I NEVER DID DANCE… NEVER REALLY WANTED TO.”
A CROWD HAD GATHERED AS THE GUNSLINGER GRINNED AND SAID “WELL, YOU OLD BAG, YOU’RE GONNA DANCE NOW,” AND STARTED SHOOTING AT THE OLD WOMAN’S FEET.
THE OLD WOMAN PROSPECTOR — NOT WANTING TO GET HER TOE BLOWN OFF –STARTED HOPPING AROUND. EVERYBODY WAS LAUGHING.

WHEN HIS LAST BULLET HAD BEEN FIRED, THE YOUNG GUNSLINGER, STILL LAUGHING, HOLSTERED HIS GUN AND TURNED AROUND TO GO BACK INTO THE SALOON.
THE OLD WOMAN TURNED TO HER PACK MULE, PULLED OUT A DOUBLE-BARRELED SHOTGUN, AND COCKED BOTH HAMMERS.
THE LOUD CLICKS CARRIED CLEARLY THROUGH THE DESERT AIR, AND THE CROWD STOPPED LAUGHING IMMEDIATELY.
THE YOUNG GUNSLINGER HEARD THE SOUNDS, TOO, AND HE TURNED AROUND VERY SLOWLY. THE SILENCE WAS ALMOST DEAFENING. THE CROWD WATCHED AS THE YOUNG GUNMAN STARED AT THE OLD WOMAN AND THE LARGE GAPING HOLES OF THOSE TWIN BARRELS.
THE BARRELS OF THE SHOTGUN NEVER WAVERED IN THE OLD WOMAN’S HANDS, AS SHE QUIETLY SAID, “SON, HAVE YOU EVER KISSED A MULE’S ASS?”
THE GUNSLINGER SWALLOWED HARD AND SAID, “NO M’AM… BUT I’VE ALWAYS WANTED TO.

THERE ARE FIVE LESSONS HERE FOR ALL OF US:

1 – Never be arrogant.
2 – Don’t waste ammunition.
3 – Whiskey makes you think you’re smarter than you are.
4 – Always make sure you know who has the power.
5 – Don’t mess with old people; they didn’t get old by being stupid.

Thanks this week go to the beloved Pema C, Umair H, Paula C, Jason P, Larry H and the power of National Public Radio.

Let’s Replace Implicit Bias with Explicit Equity

11.08.19-1.jpg

This week:

At a recent Live Well San Diego Advance attended by over 1,200 stakeholders from public, private and the social sector , in a workshop on diversity, inclusion and equity, I was exposed to an excerpt from this powerful Ted talk- The Gardener’s Tale– by Dr. Camara Jones.

Allegories on Race and Racism with Dr. Camara Jones:
Dr. Camara Jones shares four allegories on “race” and racism. She hopes that these “telling stories” empower you to do something different, and that you will remember them and pass them on.

Dr. Jones is a family physician and epidemiologist whose work focuses on the impacts of racism on the health and well-being of the nation. She seeks to broaden the national health debate to include not only universal access to high quality health care, but also attention to the social determinants of health (including poverty) and the social determinants of equity (including racism).

As a teacher, her allegories on “race” and racism illuminate topics that are otherwise difficult for many Americans to understand or discuss. She hopes through her work to initiate a national conversation on racism that will eventually lead to a National Campaign Against Racism.

Dr. Jones was an Assistant Professor at the Harvard School of Public Health from 1994 to 2000, and a Medical Officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention from 2000 to 2013. She received her BA in Molecular Biology from Wellesley College, her MD from the Stanford University School of Medicine, and both her Master of Public Health and her PhD in Epidemiology from the Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health. She also completed residency training in both General Preventive Medicine (Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health) and Family Practice (Residency Program in Social Medicine at Montefiore Hospital).

Here are many opportunities to embody the world you wish to see, bringing love into your work and being human-centered, applying triple bottom line accounting to measure the right things, raising an aging parent and honoring our wise elders, supporting gun violence prevention and making society safer, or being kind to animals- one squirrel at a time…

Wherever we find ourselves we can do something small for one another. It all begins with a single step- taking a decision.
If you are local, I sure hope you invest the time and energy to be at any/all of these events that call your spirit.

Found: A Little Squirrel

Soldiers in Belarus found a little squirrel and brought it to the Warrant officer.
The squirrel was very weak and about to die, so the officer took care of it, fed it like a baby every 4 hours.

3 months ago the guy left the army and now works as  a taxi driver – and the squirrel is always with him no matter where he goes!

Shift Happened! Business Love Part 2

UPDATED EVENT TIME from 4-7 to 7-10 pm on Nov 15th

This is way more than just a launch party for Moshe’s new book; this is a sea change to an entirely new future for all of us.

Join us on Friday, 7-10 pm, November 15, for a truly remarkable celebration.

What’s up? A huge and positive wave of change is already well underway in San Diego. We aim to celebrate and grow it together, at our next big event on Friday November 15.

In stark counterpoint to all the greed, inauthenticity, and fear that is driving so many businesses today. a stronger wave of change is here in America’s finest, kindest and most purpose-filled region. There is a steady emergence of heart-centered individuals, organizations & communities committed to a living from a deeper place of being, where love – not fear – is the prime driver, and elevating humanity is the goal, aim and purpose.

This movement is for you – if you’re tired of the fighting nature of business, the ethical compromises it requires, the emptiness you feel at times, and the suffering it causes.

This movement is for you – if you are yearning for real substance and significance, with a ravenous hunger for better ways to define success in life and in business, as well as a deep thirst for authentic connection and belonging.

This movement is for you – if you know something is off, even if you don’t know what it is- and deep inside you wonder if there is a better way, with greater satisfaction and a different way to prosper.

You’re not alone. More and more of us – individuals and organizations – are saying enough is enough!

San Diego is helping lead the way to encourage the heart, exemplified with the latest work of two local authors, Moshe Engelberg and Steve Farber, and convened by local organizations including the Chamber of Purpose San Diego.

Dr. Moshe Engelberg’s book for The Amare Wave: Uplifting Business by Putting Love to Woris coming out November 12. Best-selling author Steve Farber’s newest book Love Is Just Damn Good Business, was just released last month. These thought leaders, along with many others, are propelling San Diego to a sea change that builds the amare wave and creates damn good business for all of us.

Business is not akin to war, so we need to stop talking and acting like it is. Companies that have the courage to lead with love, do better-often much better. It’s a different and much more rewarding way to prosper in business that you can adopt too. That’s the key idea of Dr. Moshe Engelberg’s upcoming book The Amare Wave: Uplifting Business by Putting Love to Work. In it, he shows how a mighty wave, growing in momentum and force every day is propelling good organizations away from the fear-based “business as war” fighting paradigm, and toward a fresh, love-centered approach that works better for business and society.

Love is not only appropriate in the context of business, it’s at the very heart of great leadership, and, therefore, the very foundation of a thriving, competitive, sustainable enterprise. When love is intentionally part of an organization’s framework and operationalized in its culture, that’s when something transformative and great happens. That’s when you foster loyalty. That’s when you cultivate raving fans. That’s when people love you in return. That’s the core message of San Diego author Steve Farber’s latest book, Love Is Just Damn Good Business and its creating a new paradigm in the business world with implications that spill into every aspect of our lives.

If you are tired of getting pounded in the white water and ready to get into the positive flow that you already know, you’re invited to the official San Diego book launch party for The Amare Wave: Uplifting Business by Putting Love to Worand the building of this new turning tide!

No one of us is as powerful as all of us and there is no bystanding! We’re inviting you to co-lead this momentous wave bringing the power of love to the forefront of successful business.

If we can change the expectation and experience of what it means to be in business, we change everything!

This is way more than just a launch party; this is a sea change to an entirely new future for all of us.

Join us on Friday, November 15 from 7-10 PM at Corporate Alliance of San Diego. There’ll be food, mingling with kindred spirits and great collective energy. Easy parking too. And bonus- great live music from a surprise “Amare” band! And we’ll have other nourishment and sustenance for your heart and soul too.

Are you in?

Notes from the Corporate Underground- A Different Perspective Besides Divisiveness:
Visiting Berlin with Stan S
A few years ago I visited Berlin for a business meeting.  First time to the city. I grew up during the Cold War, which was always threatening to heat up.  We hunkered under our wooden school desks to prepare for the blast wave of a thermonuclear attack.  Even at the age of 10, I recognized the lunacy of that act.

Over five decades later, I found myself wandering the streets of the city that epitomized the degree of divisiveness in the world at that time.  A city, and a whole country, cut in half.  The west represented the democratic allies from World War II, and the east represented the communist countries forming what was known as the Soviet Bloc. These two ideologies were mutually exclusive, alternate forms of government founded on alternate views of reality.  Like matter and antimatter, when they might come into contact they would annihilate each other.  Or threaten to…

Helping Society Live Our Values to Manifest Our Highest Selves – “If You Don’t Stand for Something, You Will Fall for Anything”

“It’s not that you aimed your sights too high and failed,
it’s that you aimed your sights too low and succeeded!”

10.18.19-1.jpg

This week: Helping Society Live Our Values to Manifest Our Highest Selves
Human beings are consummate meaning seekers and meaning makers.
Understanding ourselves and others can be illuminating if you use the right constructs and filters.
I love Maslow’s framework for understanding human values and behavior. Recently, I facilitated a mentoring program, juxtaposing Maslow’s western psychology model and Lao Tsu’s eastern philosophic model to drive personal and professional growth and foster meaning and purpose in a values-centered life.

Living our values both personally and professionally enables a new definition of success that is not just about performance and achievement, but also about fulfillment and purpose, with implications for elevating ourselves, our family, our community and our work.

This week, I have included both personal content from remarks I delivered at the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics in San Diego and an excellent TED podcast on Maslow’s Human Needs

BBB Torch Awards for Ethics:
My Remarks on Behalf of Mission Fed as the Title Sponsor on Oct 9, San Diego CA

Thanks for this opportunity, with your help, and as part of a concerted effort for San Diego to stand up not just America’s Finest City but America’s Kindest, Most Purposeful and Most Ethical Region!
Special thanks and congratulations to all our student scholarship nominees.
You all leave us with great hope and promise for our future…

So…
You might wonder why Mission Fed decided to serve as the title sponsor for this event?
After having been honored as back to back two time BBB Ethics Torch award winners, Mission Fed wanted to loudly and proudly signal internally and externally; to ourselves, our members, our employees and to the hyper-local community we serve that ethics really matter in all aspects of life.
Because core or noble values are at the center point of every organizational culture, we could think of no better way to model and mentor a values-based business orientation than to partner with the BBB and serve as the title sponsor for the BBB Torch Awards for Ethics and amplify the good work all of you are doing, behaving into the change we wish to see in the world.

People have personalities and Organizations have cultures.
Cultural norms and values are what shape and drive organizational behaviors as well as business and societal outcomes.
Who we are speaks so loudly, that often others can’t hear what we say. We can definitely see how others behave, however.

The importance of values and culture cannot be over-stated.
Peter Drucker the business management guru and creator of Management by Objectives is famously quoted as saying, “Culture eats strategy for breakfast!”
I would add “and lunch and dinner too…”

Today more than ever, as business leaders, as parents, as community volunteers, as active citizens in one of the greatest democracies on earth, we need, without equivocation, to signal what is most important in our communities, in our classrooms and in our workplaces.

The antidote for divisiveness, greed, man’s inhumanity to his fellow man and outright self-indulgence is an ethical value system that is based on trust and transparency.

Mission Fed, the largest financial services organization exclusively serving San Diego and now serving over 250,000 members in San Diego, is in the trust business.
As we all know, trust is hard to earn and easy to lose. Unfair I know, but we must deal with it…
Transparency, as Supreme Court Justice Brandeis eloquently stated, “Sunlight is said to be the best of disinfectants”. These like other values such as fairness and inclusivity are cornerstones of great and healthy cultures.
Access and equity are other important considerations for healthy organizations.
In the same way that the sun shines equally on all of nature without discrimination, we need to ensure everyone has access to their own slice of the American dream, and through their own effort can earn and experience their own social mobility and financial success. The credit union movement was birthed with these aspirations and intentions…
As a double bottom line organization, Mission Fed is focused on both financial performance and social purpose.

Business is evolving and business leaders committed to growing scalable and sustainable enterprise like most of you in this room are taking note.
Instead of capitulating to the status quo, or allowing antiquated industrial age, mechanistic models to drive our designs, thinking and definitions of success, they are consciously choosing to put people and values whole-heartedly at the center of their organizations, and in turn are shifting mind sets, heart sets and skill sets toward a human-centered approach to work and life.
Shift Happens.
These companies know empirically and intuitively that doing well by doing good is enlightened self-interest, with significant positive implications for attracting today’s workforce, connecting more deeply with customers, and making a positive difference of consequence for our communities.
This is a purpose orientation not just a profit orientation.
Strategic purpose drives sustainable profit.

Emile Durkheim, considered the Father of Sociology said that, “ethics is the adherence to the unenforceable”.
He suggested, that behaving ethically because of external factors such as regulatory threat or fear of social ostracizing, or because we don’t want to get busted and blamed and shamed isn’t ethics at all but compliance.
Ethics is not an outside job but an inside one. We behave ethically simply put because it is the right thing to do-even if no one is watching.

Friends,
And I call you friends because I do believe there are no strangers, just friends you have not met yet, and if we haven’t met yet I look forward to meeting you,
If you don’t stand for something, you will fall for anything!
Thank you for standing up for the values that will help us turn San Diego, not just into America’s Finest City, but America’s Kindest, Most Purposeful and Most Ethical Region.
Let’s stand up for the world we want to leave to the next generation, where our inner climate is as critical to our survival and growth as our outer climate.
Thank you, today, for both seeing the change you want to be in the world, and being the change you want to see in our world-starting right here, right now.

7 WAYS TO DEAL WITH NAYSAYERS with Jon G:

Anyone who has ever pursued a goal or dream, attempted to start a new business, worked on an innovative project, shared a new idea, strived to be a champion or tried to change the world has faced naysayers along the way.

Unfortunately, the world is filled with far too many unfinished projects, unrealized goals, broken dreams, half written books, untapped potential and wounded hearts pierced by the words of a naysayer.

I know this well because early on I asked a woman who worked in the speaking business to come see me speak. She told my friend I wasn’t very good, that I would never make it and should do something else. She was actually right about one thing. I wasn’t very good. But she didn’t share my vision for the future. She didn’t know how hard I would work to improve and grow. She couldn’t see the plan God had for me. The naysayer was focused on what I was, not what I was becoming. Thankfully I didn’t let the naysayer stop me and hopefully you won’t let naysayers stop you.

In this spirit I want to share 7 Ways to Deal with Naysayers to help you create your future.

  1. Ignore them – Simply ignore what they are saying. Tune them out. Of course, you want to receive feedback that will make you better but you want to ignore people and words that seek to derail you from your goal.
  2. Hear them and know their words have no power over you – This is what I did with the woman who said I would never make it. I heard the words but knew they had no power over me. The power inside you is much greater than the words of a naysayer.
  3. Remember Gandhi’s advice “I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.” – Knowing you have the power inside you to overcome the negativity in the world means you won’t let the opinion of others define you or your destiny.
  4. Remind yourself that history doesn’t remember the critic. History remembers the one who withstood criticism to accomplish something great. – In order to create something new, achieve your goal and change the world you will have to overcome negativity, adversity and naysayers. While the naysayer says words few will remember, you will leave a legacy many won’t forget. Critics write words but they don’t write the future. You do with your faith, belief and actions.
  5. Your faith and belief must be greater than all the negativity and doubt – You must expect criticism but have an even greater expectation that you will overcome it. Your positivity must be greater than all the negativity. It may sound cliché but you must stay positive each day as you work to improve and create your future.
  6. Don’t let anyone walk through your mind with their DIRTY TWEET – This is a great spin on the Gandhi quote because with social media you will have more fans and critics than ever. Don’t let praise go to your head or let critics in your head. Utilize tips 2-5 to overcome the naysayers who have access to you online that would never say anything to your face.

7. Decide to work harder and get better. – We can allow negative comments to weaken us or fuel us. I don’t believe in trying to prove people wrong. But I do believe in working hard to become the best you can be. So consider each negative comment as a nudge to work harder and get better. You can’t control what people say but you can control the actions you take to improve. Utilize both the praise and the criticism to get better.

A Friendly Follow up from Farber, Moshe and Moi:

10.11.19-4.jpg

Steve:

Thank you, thank you, thank you for joining us for the launch of Love Is Just Damn Good Business!
I was deeply moved by the love you brought and by our collective desire to make San Diego the epicenter for the Love-In-Business movement.
I’ve attached a couple of pics from the evening. May they be a reminder of what we can accomplish together when we put our hearts into it.
As you may recall, I challenged you to go back to work and ask this question:
“How can we show our colleagues, employees, customers, stakeholders, community, etc. that we love them?”
If you’d be willing, hit “reply” to this email and share your experience in answering (or attempting to answer) this question. You can shoot a quick video, record an audio, type something, or use a stone tablet and chisel—your choice.
I’m getting goosebumps just thinking about what you have to say.
Stay tuned for news on our next get-together!
With Love,
Steve

Neville:
I would like to extend my deep gratitude to the nearly 100 of you that attended our gathering last Friday, putting people squarely at the heart of enterprise and together setting the intention to stand up a LoveBiz movement in San Diego and beyond!
If we had a chance to connect personally, I hope we can deepen that connection and relationship in the coming months.
If we didn’t get to meet yet, I hope to be blessed to get to know you better!

  • Our shared vision is aspirational– to shift our community to a love-centered approach to work and life
  • Our mission is inspirational– to put these principles into practice and help each other stay the course
  • Our values are perspirational– we have to behave into them even when others are pushing back or when no one is watching

We are planning a facilitated group experience to continue this important work within the next month, and in November we will regroup to celebrate the launch of Moshe’s book, The Amare Wave so stay tuned for details…
Finally, so we can stay connected, please join us and invite other kindred spirits to participate and become part of our emerging community at  www.ChamberofPurpose.org  There’s a Join Us button prominent featured on the landing page and a form at the bottom of every page.
If you would like to promote your Purpose-oriented events completing the Submit An Event section on our Events-Calendar page and we will help you get the word out as well.
Love,
Neville

Moshe:
Moshe here, author of The Amare Wave: Uplifting Business by Putting Love to Work, due out in November. I’m sorry I wasn’t able to join in the festivities in person, but rest assured I was there in spirit!
I’m so glad we are all joining together to grow this mighty wave, and propel our organizations away from the fear-based “business as war” fighting paradigm, toward a fresh, love-centered approach that lets us prosper greatly.
There’s nothing stronger than the energy of love. Let’s put it work! Please join me next month to celebrate the release of my book and the momentum of us in this together.
Stay tuned for details!

Love,
Moshe

The Transformative Power of Music, Literacy, Inspiring Women, Our Newest Americans and Investing in Building Better, More Caring and Sustainable Communities

The Power of Music
Music IS Transformational. This story reminds of how powerful music can be and how it works…

Benjamin Zander: How Does Music Transform Us?
Years of conducting a world-famous orchestra have shown Benjamin Zander the power of classical music. He says music speaks to our emotions — and has the ability to reach everybody.

How A Librarian Changed A Future Judge’s Life:
In 1950s Arkansas, Olly Neal didn’t care much for school. Then one day, he cut class, wandered into the library and stumbled onto a book by author Frank Yerby. The discovery changed the life of a teenager who was, in Neal’s memory, “a rather troubled high school senior.” Years later, he told his daughter, Karama, at StoryCorps in 2009, he learned that the librarian — his English teacher — had quietly and generously orchestrated the effort to transform him into a big reader. Neal went on to attend law school and later became a judge, retiring as an appellate judge of the Arkansas Court of Appeals.

Maria Shriver’s Sunday Paper: Whose Shoulders Do You Stand On?

10.04.19-2.png

10.04.19-3.png

“The moment a woman comes home to herself, the moment she knows that she has become a person of influence… who is respected and recognized, the resurrection of the world begins.” — Joan Chittister

I’ve Been Thinking…

The other day, my daughter Christina watched the documentary “RBG” about Ruth Bader Ginsburg and said she couldn’t believe how much this one woman has done in her lifetime on behalf of other women. She said it got her thinking about all the other women who have done so much, yet whose stories we know so little about.

“It’s crazy that so many women my age don’t know about all of the barriers they’ve broken for us,” Christina said. “We don’t know enough about what these women have accomplished, or about what they’re still doing to instigate change.”

Amen, I thought. Amen to acknowledging all that has been done before us, and all that’s still being done. Amen to taking a moment to acknowledge all the women whose shoulders we stand on.

Christina’s words came to mind this Tuesday when I learned that veteran journalist Cokie Roberts had passed away due to breast cancer complications. I gasped when I heard the news.

Like me, Cokie was a child of politics who found her calling in journalism. When I was starting out, Cokie, Barbara Walters, Linda Ellerbee, and Nancy Dickerson were among the women who were out there working hard so that women like myself could succeed.

I looked up to her. I admired how she combined her many roles with grace and class. Cokie’s death made me stop and think about all the other women who have inspired me over the years, and who paved the way for me and so many others.

When I look at the women running for president today, I am constantly reminded of all the pioneers who came before them. When I look at women fighting for social change today, I think about my mother and how she fought for the rights of the intellectually disabled up until her dying day. I also think about the hard work of Rosa Parks, Dorothy Day, Coretta Scott King, and others.

10.04.19-4.png

Like Christina, I am in awe of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. I deeply admire her tenacity, her brilliance, her guts, her persistence, and her work ethic. I mean, I pray to God that I can still be out there pushing for change in my 80s, just like she is. I have the same respect for Sandra Day O’Connor, who I got to work alongside in pushing for the passage of the National Alzheimer’s Strategic Plan.

Every young woman today should know these elder women’s stories. They should know what they were up against, what they endured, and how they charted their own path. Thank God many of those I admire have written their stories down in books. Gloria Steinem’s “Revolution from Within” is a must-read. So, too, are Eleanor Roosevelt’s books. And Anne Morrow Lindbergh’s  “Gift From the Sea.” And Joan Chittister’s “Called to Question.”

I’ve always been intrigued by people’s stories—their struggles and their triumphs. I’ve loved learning about the lives of women like Betty Ford and Mother Teresa because their stories humanized them for me. These are women who admitted to struggling with issues of faith, purpose, addiction, and loneliness. Yet they pushed on, nonetheless.
My mother always made sure to talk to me about her own influences. Her No. 1 was Mother Mary, followed by her own mother. She was also influenced by Mother Teresa, as well as the mothers of children with special needs, who she met out on the frontlines of humanity.
She made sure I knew about all of these women and, when possible, she introduced me to them. She took me to soup kitchens, convents, and social justice rallies. My mother was adamant that I see myself as someone who could, and should, step into the arena. That’s why she spoke to me about those who did.

I share this so you know that whether you are a mother, a teacher, a business owner, or otherwise, you have the power to inspire and influence those who are younger than you.
It’s important for young women to learn the stories of those who came before them. It’s important for them to understand that life is filled with ups and downs. Joys and struggles. Purpose and self-doubt. Connection and loneliness. Knowing this to be true has been important to me as I’ve navigated my own life. It has inspired me to know there are many who have faced life and loss and still carried on. I stand on their shoulders, and so do you.

Tomorrow night, I will speak at a memorial service in honor of one of my real-life heroines, Mary Oliver. When she and I became friends, I told Mary that her poem “The Journey” changed my life.
Mary herself didn’t live a conventional life. She lived her “one wild and precious life.” That, to me, is humbling and captivating. I’m thrilled that so many women who stand on her shoulders will get to celebrate her life and work for generations to come.
That brings me back to the other women whose shoulders I stand on. I know I wouldn’t have the career I do, had it not been for so many women before me. I know I wouldn’t have the right to vote, had their not been women who fought for that right. I know I wouldn’t have been the kind of First Lady of California I was, had there not been others before me who paved the way.
When I speak tomorrow night at Mary’s memorial, I will thank her for paving the way for my own journey. This week when I’m working at the TODAY show in New York, I’ll also think about the legacy of Barbara Walters and what I owe to her. This fall as I continue fighting against Alzheimer’s, I’ll think of my mother and thank her for her hard work fighting for causes she believed in.

This week, I’m going to make a point of saying thank you—be it in person or in my heart—to all the women whose shoulders I stand on. After all, Cokie’s untimely death reminds me again that life is precious. It is fragile. That’s why there is no time like the present to thank those who have paved the way for us to do what we do, and be who we are.

Opportunities don’t just happen to us. They happen because someone pushed before us so that we could have that opportunity in the first place. They happen because someone else fought, persisted, and persevered.

This week, thank those whose shoulders you stand on. Honor those who came before you. Be grateful for those who paved the way for the life you have now. And, if you don’t know their stories, then ask them. Or look them up. Read about their lives or watch a documentary, like my daughter did. One of the best ways to honor someone’s legacy is to learn about it, and then carry their story forward in your life and in others.

Love,
10.04.19-5.jpg

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

Dear God (and Dear Mary, since I often pray to you, too), thank you for all that you do for me. May you both help me remember to thank those who have paved the way for me and many others. Please help me persevere as I also work to pave the way for others. Help me stay the course. Amen.

Your Soul Food Friday for the Autumnal Equinox Week 2019: Having the Guts to Call the Question, Confront the Brutal Facts and Always Maintain Hope to Be the Change You Wish to See

This week:

09.27.19-1.jpg

The Autumnal Equinox:
Greetings Bright Stars,
The Autumnal Equinox occurred on Monday,  though us martial artists celebrate the magic moment at dusk facing West with a minute of proscribed moving meditation (passive activity), and are often treated to rad sunsets on the West Coast! The Equinox and Solstice cycle reminds us about that longer annual marathon cycle (365 days) that might be overlooked or underappreciated in our day to day (24 hour) sprint cycle.
Pausing to reflect, connect and celebrate the natural order and flow of that larger passage of time, the motion of the Earth in relationship with the larger Plano sphere, and the dynamic yet constant changing of the seasons without and within.

This marks the start of Autumn for us in the Northern Hemisphere.
For our friends in the Southern Hemisphere, Spring has just begun.
On this day, the Sun rises directly in the East, and sets directly in the West.
It’s one of two times a year that the day and night are of the same length. (Equi-)

The Autumnal Equinox also marks the beginning of shorter days and longer nights. Tis the season to gather with friends and strengthen our spirits in preparation for the passage into Winter. And it’s also  a time of thanksgiving, for on the other side of that dark Winter is Spring. Right now the sun is entering the constellation Libra, the balanced scales. So the Equinox is the time of year to bring balance into our life, clean up clutter and remove the things that don’t bring us joy – clean with mindful intention of transformation. The Japanese have a term for this. Isagi Yoku or “pure, clean spirit”. Here’s to a rich harvest of your efforts, a full and flowing heart, easy love, and effortless kindness.

May you find yourself in natural balance with your life and with the environment, which right now really needs us to wake up!
Please stay in tune with our outer and your inner nature…

Note: Interested in the benefits of the wisdom traditions, specifically martial arts for you, your family or your kids? See flyer (below) for a class we teach at UC San Diego that is now in its 38th year…

Having the guts to call the question…
HOW DARE YOU!
Speaking of waking up, on the same day as the equinox, teenager Greta Thunberg, referenced in previous Soul Food missives for taking a yacht from Europe to the US for the UN event to limit carbon emissions, opened the United Nations Climate Action Summit with this powerful speech.
“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood with your empty words”…

Confronting the facts…

Earth’s Oceans Are Getting Hotter And Higher, And It’s Accelerating
The U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has released its latest report on the oceans, and it’s not good. The report also notes a relatively new phenomenon in the oceans: marine heat waves.

But Always Maintaining Hope…

“Don’t Stop Believin” Goes On And On, Because We Need It To:

Thirty-eight years after it debuted on the album Escape, “Don’t Stop Believin'” is the go-to anthem for perseverance that has itself persevered, successfully riding wave after new wave of media. Though born in the era of rock radio and cassette mixtapes, the song found its real glory at the dawn of binge TV and the smartphone, and it has woven its way into weddings, bar mitzvahs, graduations, the 2005 World Series, The Sopranos and Glee.

It’s 2,500 Years Old. It’s the latest thing…

In this exclusive NCPC two hour interactive session join us as we explore, experience and embody the principles and practices of deepening the mentor/mentee relationship using information and insights from the greats both in Western psychology and Eastern philosophy.

Pure Joy & Catching the Amare Wave

This week:

“The day will come when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides and gravitation,

Getting to the Heart of Business:
Shift Happened! Foresight is 20/20

Join us on Friday evening, September 27, for a truly remarkable celebration.

Why?

A seismic shift of positive proportions is already well underway in San Diego.
In stark counterpoint to silent killers like heart disease, or silent scourges like depression, or not so silent dividers like polarizing political party affiliations, a stronger silent typography has emerged in America’s finest, kindest and most purpose-filled region. Like lotus blossoms that thrive in the murkiest of waters, running equally silent and equally deep, there is a steady emergence of heart-centered individuals, organizations & communities committed to a living from a deeper place of being, where love not fear is the prime driver, and elevating humanity is the goal, aim and purpose.

Tired of the sordid spectacle of the 24 hour news cycle, and yearning for real substance and significance, with a ravenous hunger for better ways to define success in life and in business, as well as a deep thirst for authentic connection and belonging, we’re seeing more and more individuals and organizations saying enough is enough!

Instead of capitulating to the status quo, they are consciously choosing to put people whole-heartedly at the center of their organizations, and shifting mind sets, heart sets and skill sets toward a love-centered approach to work and life. These companies know empirically and intuitively that doing well by doing good is enlightened self-interest with significant positive implications for attracting today’s workforce, connecting more deeply with customers, and making a difference of consequence for our communities.

While pockets of innovation are found everywhere, San Diego is helping lead the way to encourage the heart, exemplified with the latest work of two local authors, Steve Farber and Moshe Engelberg, & convened by local organizations including the Chamber of Purpose San Diego.

Best-selling author Steve Farber’s newest book “Love Is Just Damn Good Business”, was just released this month.

Dr. Moshe Engelberg’s book “The Amare Wave: Uplifting Business by Putting Love to Work is due out in November.

These thought leaders are propelling San Diego to a sea change that builds the amare wave and creates damn good business for all of us.

Business is not akin to war, so we need to stop talking and acting like it is. Deficit thinking is as dated and destructive as bloodletting. Companies that have the courage to lead with love, do better—often much better.

That’s the core message of San Diego author Steve Farber’s latest book, Love Is Just Damn Good Business, and its creating a new paradigm in the business world with implications that spill into every aspect of our lives.

If you are tired of getting pounded in the white water and ready to get in the flow that you already know, you’re invited to the official San Diego book launch party for Love Is Just Damn Good Business and the building of this new turning tide!

No one of us is as powerful as all of us and there is no bystanding!

We’re inviting you to co-lead this EVOL-ution (love backward that needs to be reversed).
If we can change the expectation and experience of what it means to be in business, we change everything!

This is way more than just a launch party; this is a sea change to an entirely new future for all of us.

To know and not to do, is not to know…

Join us on Friday, September 27 from 7 – 10 PM at Corporate Alliance of San Diego. There’ll be food, mingling with kindred spirits and great collective energy. Marco’s Pizza, a company featured in Steve’s book, is generously providing pizza and salads. And we’ll have other nourishment and sustenance for your heart and soul too.

It time to co-lead this LoveBiz EVOL-ution.

Are you in?
Spread the love, mobilize your peeps, and sign up below so we can expect you and feed you.

Love Quotes?
10 Life Quotes That (If Applied) Will Change the Way You See The World Forever:
“Why do we love life quotes so much?
I think I have the answer. Life quotes have a way of piercing through the B.S. and noise surrounding us. Life quotes are the Gordian knots that cut through that noise and reveal the essence of life we know deep down but tend to forget.
I’m a writer, which means I love quotes. But I also understand how simultaneously insightful and useless they can be. You can do one of two things with a quote — use it as inspirational fluff to post on Instagram or use the insight to change your life. The wisdom of quotes is extremely powerful when applied”…

Love Real World Education?
Launching New EdCorps + a Fundraising Campaign:
143 New Student-Run Businesses Changing the World

09.13.19-2.png

On Monday morning, 143 new student-run businesses launch, each with their own unique mission, goals, and universe of learning and possibility. It’s one reason this never gets old – because each class can use their business as a vehicle for creativity, experimentation, and connection to the world around them. And it looks different every time.

Before we push play on our fifth school year, I wanted to share the EdCorps ’18-’19 Yearbook from this past year. In it, you’ll find stories of a pre-k class using their business to support people with epilepsy and those of high school students building products that address local ecological issues. Compiling these stories is always my favorite time of year because the patterns are undeniable; students discovering what they’re capable of and finding ways to use their skills and passions for their communities. The entrepreneurial journey is different in each class, but the student transformation happens everywhere. I wanted to share those stories with you here.

I’ve got other big news – this is the beginning of our first public fundraising campaign. In the past, we’ve been so busy focusing on classrooms that we haven’t made it easy for passionate people to help us grow the movement. That’s changing. Today, everyday people can invest directly in student learning by becoming EdCorps Angels and giving monthly. And for those excited to help scale the impact of the EdCorps Community in more substantive ways, they can become an Impact Sponsor and invest in projects that help us improve outcomes for thousands more students. You can learn more by clicking here or below.

Over 450 student-run businesses to date – all because of the tenacity of educators, the persistence and brilliance of students, and the support of fellow dreamers, doers, and thought partners like you. We wouldn’t have made it this far – and wouldn’t make it too much further – without people like you. So whether it be a monetary gift, your mentorship and personal insights, or note of encouragement or support, we’re grateful you’re on our team.09.13.19-3.png

Love is Just Damn Good Business…

Save the Date: September 27th 2019 at 7pm at Corporate Alliance- Love is Just Damn Good Business Book Launch Party Sponsored by the Chamber of Purpose as we stand up Love as a cornerstone in San Diego!

My friend Steve Farber, author of The Radical Leap, The Radical Edge, and Greater Than Yourself, has just released his latest and, I think, greatest book.

It’s called Love Is Just Damn Good Business, and I believe that it’s going to help create a new paradigm in the business world.

The book tosses aside the touchy-feely notions of love in business and recognizes the real power it holds. Love is not only appropriate in the context of business, it’s the foundation of great leadership, and, therefore, the very foundation of a thriving, competitive enterprise. When love is part of an organization’s framework and operationalized in its culture, employees and customers feel genuinely valued.

Employees who are passionate about their work are more loyal, innovative, creative, and inspired—and that translates to great customer experience. They don’t serve others out of obligation, but because of a genuine desire to improve people’s lives. And when customers reciprocate by loving your products, your services, and your people, that’s when something great happens. That’s when you get loyalty. That’s when you get raving fans. That’s when people love you in return.

And in that spirit, you’re invited to the official San Diego book launch party for Love Is Just Damn Good Business!

Join us on Friday, September 27 from 7 – 10 PM at Corporate Alliance of San Diego. There’ll be food and mingling and great company. And, of course, Steve will read selections from the book.

Let’s co-lead this fantastic LoveBiz revolution. If we can change the expectation and experience of what it means to be in business, we change everything.
