One Social Entrepreneur’s Modeling the Way for A Cause He Cares About And Rides 1170 Miles For Challenged Athletes Foundation

From my friend Bob B.

Just a quick update on my CAF Million Dollar Challenge quest.

Bags are packed, GPS loaded with the route, bike’s are lubed, tires are pumped and the weather looks… well, like fall weather.

This Sunday, Cody Stevenson from Holland Cycles and I set off northbound from Santa Barbara on what will ultimately be a 550 mile northbound adventure to San Francisco to join up with my Million Dollar Challenge brethren for the 620 miles ride south back to San Diego. Cody and I will be lonely on the way up, fighting the inevitable headwind, and some pretty awesome mountain passes, since we’ll be taking the more difficult path through the coastal range.

I re-energized my blog, so should you actually want to follow along and see how we’re doing, you can check out some pics, twitter posts, etc. from the road all in one spot at: http://www.gliderking.com

If you want to follow me directly on social media;
Twitter: @gliderking
Instagram: @gliderking
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/gliderking

With the Garmin GPS unit on my handlebar, it will send an update that will allow real time tracking and each day you can get tired watching our progress. There also a link to send beer and pieces of pie. No really, it’s gonna be awesome. But you must tune into the blog page to get these updates.

Meanwhile, I wanted to thank everyone for their incredible support. You don’t just roll out of bed and ride 1170 miles for Challenged Athletes Foundation. You need some help along the way. Darcy has been my rock and support to help make this happen. I could never have done this without convincing her that I was not having a midlife crisis. Coach Rob Panzera from Cycling Camp San Diego (http://ccsd.com) took a fat overweight racer and helped get me in the best shape of my life over the past couple of years. Bill Holland (http://hollandcycles.com) built me the most awesome custom bike on the planet that is perfectly suited to my riding style, and that was in the 80’s. My new bike is even more awesome!

But it’s the money I helped raise for CAF with your help that matters most. Thank you so much for believing in me, and that I can do this and for supporting CAF. The organization is amazing group of people who every day make the impossible happen. All the money we raised, over $26,000! goes directly to the programs of Challenged Athletes and not into my outrageous cycling budget!

Thank you again for your support. It’s never too late to add a bit of icing on the cake, so the donation link is below. I did up the my fundraising goal to $27,000 btw. I’ll hopefully send a mid-ride email update! Stay tuned!

 Insights on Effective Communication:

“To speak and to speak well are two things. A fool may talk, but a wise man speaks.”
–Ben Jonson Jacobean playwright, poet, and literary critic

“The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.”
— Peter F. Drucker, noted scholar on management

 So who is right?

The Habits of Supremely Happy People

As you diehard soul-foodies know, enhancing happiness, resilience and wisdom are part of my quest for all of us.

Here are some tips from the supremely happy

http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3909772?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews

My Favorite Team Building Exercises:

Positive, high performing teams don’t happen by accident. They are built, cultivated and developed through great communication, shared experiences, positive interactions, common challenges, and vulnerable story telling that connect people at a deeper level. Having worked with many business and sports teams I’ve witnessed firsthand what many great leaders do to build their teams and want to share with you a few of my favorites.

1. Share a Defining Moment – When a leader and each team member share a defining moment in their life you learn things you never knew before. Immediately you know your team members a whole lot better and feel more connected to them. When doing this exercise I like to have each person in the room simply stand up and share a defining moment in their life. It’s amazing how simple and powerful this exercise is.

2. Hero, Highlight, Hardship – I learned this one from Cori Close, the UCLA women’s basketball coach, who told me this idea when I spoke to her team a few weeks ago. With this exercise each person talks about one of their heroes and why they are their hero. Then they share a positive highlight as well as a hardship from their past. You learn a lot about your team members when you know their heroes, their past highlights and challenging moments. Note: for this to work it must be understood that what is said in the room, stays in the room. You must create a safe place (one leader I worked with called the meeting room “the safe place” where people feel comfortable being honest and vulnerable.

3. Get on the Bus Together – A lot of leaders have their teams read The Energy Bus to create unity and a common dialogue but Rhonda Revelle, the University of Nebraska Softball coach took it one step further. She paired up her team and had each pair present to the rest of the team 1 of the 10 rules of The Energy Bus in a fun and creative way. Some made a video, others sang a song, some gave a speech, some made a painting, etc.. Rhonda told me the team took on a whole new life and energy after these teammates brought the rules to life for each other. She said this energy propelled them to the College World Series that year.

4. Fuel up the Tanks – The Brown University Women’s Lacrosse team gave each player a manila envelope with a picture of a bus and their name on it. The envelopes represented their energy bus tanks and were placed on a table in the locker-room. Players were also given index cards where they could write something positive about a teammate and place the card (positive fuel) in their teammates manila envelope (energy bus tank). After practices and games players were encouraged to write positive comments and fill their teammate’s energy bus tanks with positive energy. The exercise created more positive interactions and generated appreciation and encouragement that fueled the team throughout the year.

5. If You Really Knew Me. If you really knew me you would know _________. I learned this exercise from my friend and author Mike Robbins and it is one of the most vulnerable but powerful exercises a team could do. I recently took a leadership team through this exercise and at first they shared very shallow comments like “you would know that I’m very generous and wonderful.” But after challenging them to go deeper and sharing something vulnerable about myself they started sharing meaningful stories and feelings that connected the team in a deep and powerful way.

The Power of Accountability!

Consider the implication of this idea…

What would happen if I were to follow you with a camera crew 24 hours a day 7 days a week for the next 100 days while you went for your goals?

I bet 3 things would happen….

1) You would START doing the things you say you need to do.

2) You would STOP doing the things you know you shouldn’t be doing.

3) You would MAKE monumental performance gains and change your life.

How is this possible?

Through the power of accountability!

Accountability will serve your character, as well as your credibility, and more importantly, it will get you to accomplish all your goals.

What stops most people from accomplishing their goals is one thing: their lack of accountability. Let’s change that TODAY!

Design Thinking Expands the Possibilities…

7 Steps to Greatness:

How do we unlock our greatness? Here is one person’s approach…

Helen Keller said, “One can never consent to creep, when one feels the impulse to soar.”  This article might help you to soar…

We are all giants, we’re all capable of greatness, but that greatness must first be unlocked.  Here are seven steps that will allow you to unlock your greatness and awaken the giant within you.

The 7 Steps to Greatness:

1. Get Angry

“Intolerance of your present creates your future.” – Mike Murdock

Nothing happens until you get angry (motivated)!  If you can live with it, it will never change.  I don’t care if its 30 extra pounds around your waist, or a back-talking teenager…If you can put up with it, you will always have to.

2. Get Clear

“If you can’t see it, you can’t have it.” – Mr. Self Development

It’s just as difficult to get to a place you can’t see, as it is to come back from a place you’ve never been.  You must get crystal clear on exactly what you want to accomplish.  Isaiah said, “Write the vision and make it plain.” You must see your vision throughout the day, you must dream about your goal throughout the night.  Charles De Gaulle said, “For glory gives herself only to those who have always dreamed of her.”

3. Have Faith

“Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re probably right.” – Henry Ford

You must be convinced of your success before you succeed.  You must know success is coming like you know next week is coming.  Only when you become convinced of it will you take the actions that will guarantee your success.  You must believe first, …then you will get to experience.

4. Make a Decision

“Decisions decide destinies.” – Mr. Self-Development

Success begins with a decision; it doesn’t begin with good luck, it doesn’t begin with chance, it begins with a decision.  Make the decision to succeed, and never concede on that decision.

The decisions that you make in this life will ultimately determine your destiny.  Nothing is more crucial to your success than your daily decisions, so decide to succeed daily.

5. Change The Way You Think

“Nothing is more profound to me than the fact that a man can change his life by changing his thoughts.” – Mr. Self-Development

Your thoughts are seeds into your future; whatever you plant in the garden of your mind will surely blossom and bring forth fruit.  I suggest you plant seeds of hope, prosperity, success and faith.

Right thinking, causes right action; only when you’re thinking is right, will your actions be right.

6. Work Harder Than Anybody Else

“I do not have superior intelligence or faultless looks.  I do not captivate a room or run a mile under six minutes.

I only succeeded because I was still working after everyone else went to sleep.” – Greg Evans

Greatness requires great effort…so don’t get discouraged.  Keep your hand to the plow, and if your hand is steady, your harvest will surely come.  Emile Zola said, “The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work.”

7. Teach Somebody Else

“A good teacher is like a candle – it consumes itself to light the way for others.” – Anonymous

Create a legacy of success; change those around you, and your life will have improved the entire earth…

Speaking of Soaring…

Here’s an incredible video from a camera mounted on the back of an eagle.  It’s easy to see why people consider the eagle to be a symbol of freedom in so many cultures…

Life can sometimes feel like a roller coaster:

This one in Prague looks like a wild ride!

The Cost of a Miracle:

A little girl went to her bedroom and pulled a glass jelly jar from its hiding place in the closet..

She poured the change out on the floor and counted it carefully. Three
Times, even. The total had to be exactly perfect. No chance here for mistakes.

Carefully placing the coins back in the jar and twisting on the cap, she
slipped out the back door and made her way 6 blocks to Rexall’s Drug Store with the big red Indian Chief sign above the door.

She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention, but he was too busy at this moment.
Tess twisted her feet to make a scuffing noise. Nothing. She cleared her throat with the most disgusting sound she could muster.

No Good.

Finally she took a quarter from her jar and banged it on the glass counter. That did it!

‘And what do you want?’ the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages,’ he
said without waiting for a reply to his question.

‘Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,’ Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. ‘He’s really, really sick….and I want to buy a miracle.’

‘I beg your pardon?’ said the pharmacist.

‘His name is Andrew and he has something bad growing inside his head and my Daddy says only a miracle can save him now.

So how much does a miracle cost?’

‘We don’t sell miracles here, little girl.
I’m sorry but I can’t help you,’ the pharmacist said, softening a little.

‘Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.’

The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man.

He stooped down and asked the little girl, ‘What kind of a miracle does your brother need?’

‘ I don’t know,’ Tess replied with her eyes welling up. I just know he’s really sick and Mommy says he needs an
Operation. But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.’

‘How much do you have?’ asked the man from Chicago .

‘One dollar and eleven cents,’ Tess answered barely audible
‘And it’s all the money I have, but I can get some more if I need to.’

‘Well, what a coincidence,’ smiled the man. ‘A dollar and eleven cents—the exact price of a
Miracle for little brothers.’

He took her money in one hand and with  the other hand he grasped her mitten and said ‘Take me to where you live.

I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the miracle you need.’

That well-dressed man was Dr. Carlton Armstrong, a surgeon, specializing in neuro-surgery.

The operation was completed free of charge and it wasn’t long until Andrew was home again and doing well.

Mom and Dad were happily talking about the chain of events that had led them to this place..

‘That surgery,’ her Mom whispered. ‘was a real miracle.. I wonder how much it would have cost?’

Tess smiled. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost…one dollar and eleven cents… plus the faith of a little child.

In our lives, we never know how many miracles we will need.
A miracle is not the suspension of natural law, but the operation of a higher law.

I know you’ll keep this ball moving!
Here it goes. Throw it out to someone who means something to you!

A ball is a circle, no beginning, no end. It keeps us together like our Circle of Friends. But the treasure inside for you to see is the treasure of friendship you’ve granted to me.

Today
I pass the friendship ball to you.

Pass it on to someone who is a friend.

MY OATH TO YOU…

When you are sad…..I will dry your tears.

When you are scared……I will comfort your fears.

When You are worried…..I will give you hope.

When you are confused……I will help you cope.

And when you are lost…..and can’t see the light, I
Shall be your beacon…shining ever so bright.

This is my oath…..I pledge till the end.

Why you may ask?….Because you’re my friend.

90# on your telephone

(This apparently also applies to cell phones!)

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying
himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be TELUS) who was
conducting a test on the telephone lines. He stated that to complete the test
I should touch nine (9), zero (0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up.
Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.

Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#,
you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which
enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local
jails/prisons. DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE…

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so
do not dial 90# for anyone!

Speaking of innovation, these images model creative and lateral thinking but beware as a couple are a bit risqué…

Happy Soul Food Friday!

“You could not step twice into the same river; for other waters are ever flowing on to you.”– Heraclitus

…Time is like a river.

You cannot step in the same river twice, because the water that has passed will never pass again. Enjoy every moment of life.

As a bagpiper, I play many gigs. Recently I was asked by a funeral director to play at a graveside service for a homeless man. He had no family or friends, so the service was to be at a pauper’s cemetery in the Nova Scotia back country.

As I was not familiar with the backwoods, I got lost and, being a typical man, I didn’t stop for directions.

I finally arrived an hour late and saw the funeral guy had evidently gone and the hearse was nowhere in sight. There were only the diggers and crew left and they were eating lunch. I felt badly and apologized to the men for being late.

I went to the side of the grave and looked down and the vault lid was already in place. I didn’t know what else to do, so I started to play.

The workers put down their lunches and began to gather around.. I played out my heart and soul for this man with no family and friends. I played like I’ve never played before for this homeless man.

And as I played Amazing Grace, the workers began to weep. They wept, I wept, we all wept together. When I finished, I packed up my bagpipes and started for my car. Though my head hung low, my heart was full.

As I opened the door to my car, I heard one of the workers say, “I never seen nothing like that before and I’ve been putting in septic tanks for twenty years.”
Apparently I’m still lost….it’s a man thing.

Ok seriously though, you might enjoy this great visual & mental reset:

Soul-filled living is not all humor and zen-like images…

Sometimes we have to buck the status quo and be the voice for those who would otherwise hide behind the skirts (or kilts) of anonymity.

May we have the courage to speak for the downtrodden, the marginalized, & the poor of spirit

This story puts that in perspective…

STAND UP AND BE COUNTED

When Khrushchev pronounced his famous denunciation of Stalin, someone in the Congress Hall is reported to have said, “Where were you. Comrade Khrushchev, when all those innocent people were being slaughtered?”

Khrushchev paused, looked round the Hall, and said, “Will the person who said that kindly stand up!”

Tension mounted in the Hall. No one moved.

Said Khrushchev, “Well, whoever you are, you have your answer now. I was in exactly the same position then as you find yourself in now.”

It that was a bit heavy, this will lighten your mood…

Soul Food for August 9th 2013: The Wonder of Technology

Happy Soul Food Friday!

 eyespace

Have you ever really pondered the power of technology and its impact in our lives?

Our relationship to technology can be a real love/hate thing

Here are a few interesting applications to make us think and feel about how technology can be a great servant but a horrible master…

The Power of Simulation: Flight 214 Airline Crash Animation

Learning from our mistakes so we can prevent them in the future can be a handy application of simulations.

Here is some powerful animation of flight 214 by an ex airline captain who specializes in forensic animation.

The actual recording from the control tower plays in background.

The Power of Information: ACCESS ANY ADDRESS IN THE WORLD faster than Google Earth.

This might startle you … it’s incredible technology.

After opening the link below, type in the address you want slowly, letter by letter, space by space, and watch each time where it takes you by successive approximation.

The Power of Space Travel: Take Your Personal Tour of the International Space Station:

This link will take you to the Space Station, complete with a “personal tour” by Sunita Williams.

Sunita shows us how big this place really is and explains how all aspects of human needs are handled on board.

The Power of Attention: The Beauty of a Second

6 Billion seconds ago the chronograph was created. Today, can we experience the moment, one second at a time?

Integrate the Right & Left Sides of The Brain
Sometimes things are hidden in plain sight and it takes a different way of seeing to appreciate things anew.
The following will show you when you are using your Right or Left side of your brain.

If you see the picture exactly as it is, you are using the left side.

When you stare you will see the figure shift; and you will be using your right brain.

You can switch back and forth.
Stare to go to Right brain (it sort of trances you out or puts you in an altered NON THINKING state).
Begin thinking and reasoning about it and you will move back out of the altered state into Left brain thinking.

Stare at this picture and you will see this man turn his face.
