A personality survey for an 11-month-old is a pretty tall order:
When one dad was faced with the task of filling in a questionnaire sent home by his daughter’s daycare, he did something any parent with a wicked sense of humor will appreciate…
WordPress sent me a note, sharing that Soul Food Friday was viewed 7,200 times in 2013, so let’s keep reflecting and refracting the light in our communities and families and keep inspiring (breathing life into) ourselves, as we can’t give away what we don’t have.
That which is most Personal, is most Universal!
After spending the Winter Holiday in India for the first time in 16 years, I met people who were receiving and reading SFF that I have never met in my life. They might be thousands of miles away but are sharing the same intentions and commitment to leaving our world a little bit better than we found it.
Let’s not underestimate the impact each one of us can make…
It IS a small world after all. My new BFF Dr. Alan Daly, Chair of UCSD Educational Studies who is doing transformative work with respect to education outcomes- including but not limited to with the Vista Unified School District where we spent yesterday morning together- has rarified my thinking from the conventional “you are judged by the company you keep” and ‘It is not what you know, but who you know’, to more accurately, “Who you know defines what you know”.
Choosing what we focus on and who we invest our time with in 2014- with intentionality- will make this the best year ever!
This little blue planet is getting smaller.
Are we getting Blinded by Progress?
This is worth a read…
BLINDED BY PROGRESS IS HERE!
Blinded by Progress walks us smack into tough questions about our survival on this planet … and finds possibilities within our reach!
More and more of us are daring to ask: Why do we Americans praise lifestyles and growth economics that require five planets? Why does this five-planet illusion grip us so tightly even though it defies commonsense? Why do we continue to pursue economic growth as if it is economic health when we know it is ecologically suicidal? Are we that sinister? unconscious? Is it blind faith in technology? Are we simply addicted to “More?”
Blinded by Progress takes us into the ring to tussle with these urgent, life-defying questions … and come out empowered with new thoughts and actions. A whole new worldview is spelled out. Reading it releases that “ah-hah” feeling we get when truth breaks in on us and breaks us out of illusion. Read it alone or discuss it in a group.
The author discloses how he unwittingly came under the spell of MultiEarth living and then, as his consciousness shifted, how he began reshaping his life to OneEarth living—a project in process. Readers will follow along with the personal quest of the author, and come to new, life-giving decisions about their own MultiEarth vs. OneEarth choices.
Blinded by Progress makes special contributions to the global conversation on sustainability now underway. The author clearly delineates the contrasts between MultiEarth and OneEarth worldviews. The chapter on the religious devotion given to MultiEarth economics and practices contains perspectives and content typically left out of conversations on the themes treated in this book. The power that myth has to keep us practicing the illusionary MultiEarth worldview is revealed by using John Steinbeck’s magnum opus, East of Eden. That novel’s use of the Cain and Abel myth provides bold guidance for our own MultiEarth-OneEarth choices. The concluding distinction between MultiEarth and OneEarth progress shows us how we got into our illusionary bubble and leaves no doubt that we have the power to choose differently. The personal journey of the author weaves in and out of the chapters, serving to illustrate the book’s themes, the subtleties by which MultiEarth progress blinds us, and the power to choose OneEarth’s satisfying ways.
Lee Van Ham has been working on ecological economics since 2000. This work follows on three decades of experience in leading congregations where his writing and teaching gifts developed. In 2009, he met Michael Johnson; the two came together around their common interest in creating books and film on themes of ecology and economics. Johnson is an Emmy-award winning filmmaker who has begun work on a related documentary. Out of their relationship the OneEarth Project was born.
What Others Are Saying
Blinded by Progress is a work of keen observation, a great deal of scholarship and an abiding care for living beings. There were many paths that we might have taken in the past that would have led to a better world than the one we inhabit. Lee Van Ham’s writing delineates a path going forward that does not repeat the illusions of progress. I hope it opens many eyes.
—Paul Hawken, entrepreneur, environmentalist, and author of Blessed Unrest and Natural Capitalism
Lee has written a book that is a hair-on-fire call to action to free ourselves from our folly of only looking at Me and moving us to We…Pronto.
—Will Marre’, Founder, The American Dream Project
“’El mundo que queremos es uno donde quepan muchos mundos’ – ‘We want a world where many worlds can coexist.’ These words spoken by the Maya Indigenous people in resistance add color and meaning to the important and timely message of this book…. This book is a must read for people and communities committed to collectively raise
consciousness. It is a guide in creating concrete steps toward being responsible citizens of one earth.”
— Marco Tavanti, PhD, International Sustainable Development Prof., DePaul University, Chicago; Pres. of World Engagement Institute (WEI).
Blinded by Progress is an eye-opening look at our current economic and social system that is both heart-centered and intellectually accurate. It’s one-of-a-kind perspective, based on deep research as well as first-hand experience, takes the reader quickly to the very foundation of what is wrong with our current world situation in order to fix it.
—Nikki Lyn Pugh, published author and journalist and 2011 USD Women Peacemaker Project Selected Peace Writer
In Blinded by Progress Van Ham createsa work of great integrity—an integrity that comes from his bringing sound theological and economic thinking together with visionary consciousness, deep commitment, and illusion-breaking stories. The result is a clear and powerful message that the author does not dilute with checklists of minor feel-good actions we can take on our own. Instead, Van Ham dares to call us all to nothing less than a radical change of consciousness, breaking through the illusions of our dominant MultiEarth economy in order to embrace the alternative OneEarthism. And contrary to what many claim, there are real alternatives. There is much truth and wisdom to be found in these pages. — Barry Shelley, PhD, Political economist; Global Agriculture and Climate Change Advisor, Oxfam America

What a Wonderful World…
I’ve Learned… by Andy Rooney
If you will take the time to read these, I am pretty sure they will touch your soul, as the subjects he covers affect us all on a daily basis:
They’re written by Andy Rooney , a man with the gift of saying so much with so few words. Enjoy…….
I’ve learned…. That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.
I’ve learned…. That when you’re in love, it shows.
I’ve learned…. That just one person saying to me, ‘You’ve made my day!’ makes my day.
I’ve learned…. That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
I’ve learned…. That being kind is more important than being right.
I’ve learned…. That you should never say no to a gift from a child.
I’ve learned…. That I can always pray for someone when I don’t have the strength to help him in some other way.
I’ve learned…. That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.
I’ve learned…. That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.
I’ve learned…. That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.
I’ve learned…. That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.
I’ve learned…. That we should be glad God doesn’t give us everything we ask for.
I’ve learned…. That money doesn’t buy class.
I’ve learned…. That it’s those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.
I’ve learned… That under everyone’s hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.
I’ve learned…. That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.
I’ve learned…. That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
I’ve learned…. That love, not time, heals all wounds.
I’ve learned…. That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
I’ve learned… That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
I’ve learned…. That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
I’ve learned… That life is tough, but I’m tougher.
I’ve learned…. That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.
I’ve learned…. That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I’ve learned…. That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.
I’ve learned…. That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
I’ve learned…. That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
I’ve learned…. That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you’re hooked for life.
I’ve learned…. That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you’re climbing it.
I’ve learned…. That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.

Just a Typewriter
This is amazing..!!!!!
He lived at Rose Haven Nursing
Home ( Roseburg , OR ) for years.
Paul Smith, the man with extra ordinary talent was born
on September 21, 1921, with severe cerebral palsy.
Not only had Paul beaten the odds of a life with spastic
cerebral palsy, a disability that impeded his speech and
mobility but also taught himself to become a master artist
as well as a terrific chess player even after being devoid
of a formal education as a child.
“When typing, Paul used his left hand to steady his right one.
Since he couldn’t press two keys at the same time,
he almost always locked the shift key down and
made his pictures using the symbols at the top
of the number keys.
In other words, his pictures were based on these
characters ….. @ # $ % ^ & * ( )_ . Across seven decades,
Paul created hundreds of pictures.
He often gave the originals away.
Sometimes, but not always, he kept
or received a copy for his own records.
As his mastery of the typewriter grew,
he developed techniques to create
shadings, colors, and textures that made his
work resemble pencil or charcoal drawings.”
This great man passed away on June 25, 2009,
but left behind a collection of his amazing
artwork that will be an inspiration for many.
You know that saying about
“When life closes a door,
God opens a window”?
Well, I think God just helped this
man build a whole new house.
This is Typewriter Art……..
Can you believe this art
was created using a typewriter?

Make Change!
Neville —
The day you signed your first Change.org petition, you became part of something big. Now, people everywhere are making change — and you’re a part of it.
Last week, Change.org reached 50 million users worldwide. That’s the size of Facebook in 2007 or Twitter in 2009. But this platform isn’t just about signatures or shares: it helps you win the change you want to see.
Every month, millions of people just like you win hundreds of victories through Change.org.
In India, Laxmi – a young woman who survived a brutal acid attack – won her Change.org campaign to regulate the sale of acid nationwide. Her petition was one of a flood of powerful campaigns started by survivors and families to protect India’s women from abuse.
In Thailand, rural teacher Ajarn Chatchawan’s petition helped save thousands of village schools from closure — hitting the front pages of national newspapers and changing the Education Minister’s mind.
Here in the U.S., a soldier won a visa for the Afghan translator who saved his life, and a part-time nanny collected 300,000 signatures to keep Bank of America from introducing debit card fees. After dozens of targeted petitions, the Boy Scouts finally ended their ban on gay scouts. And on other issues, thousands of individual stories and smaller local petitions are adding up to big change.
Across continents, Change.org campaigns against government corruption are shifting power back to people.
In Indonesia, President Yudyohono publicly supported a petition championing investigation of police corruption and misconduct.
In Brazil this year, after politicians tried to give themselves immunity from corruption charges, prosecutors started a swarm of Change.org petitions which climaxed in street protests and a dramatic victory.
And it’s not just governments: companies from Coca-Cola and Ford to small businesses are changing their ways in response to your campaigns.
These are only glimpses of the larger picture. On thousands of issues big and small, you’ve changed lives, communities, and even countries for the better.
Already, there are more stories than anyone can tell. And we’re all just getting started.
Breeze & Buttons:
Hours after his birth, Breeze was found stumbling around by a farmer. The newborn foal was abandoned by his mother.
That’s when the farmer took him to Devon-based Mare and Foal Sanctuary where they instantly started caring for him.
What happened next is both adorable and heartwarming.
The staff put a four foot giant Teddy Bear in with Breeze.
The Teddy Bear’s name is Buttons and Breeze quickly warmed up to him.
Without his mother Breeze has found an adorable replacement.
The two have been inseparable and they expect Breeze to be just fine.
Thanks to the rescuers and those who cared enough to take this little Cutie in.
And thanks, of course, to Buttons.
Thanks to everyone that has contributed to, read some of these soul food posts, and most importantly, practiced the art of awakening the soul.
Happy Soul Food Friday! I know the “formal” Thanksgiving holiday, by all calendars is long gone, but thanks giving is the very essence of the entire holiday season n’est pas!
In that regard I sure hope you enjoy these pieces
A Holiday Card from Our Team to YOU
The Power of Thank You
A Bad Side to Doing Good?
Hearth and Heart Warmers…
And, something to make you break out the Kleenex box!
In the spirit of the holiday season, I’d love to share the benefits and power of two simple words. THANK YOU.
They are two words that have the power to transform our health, happiness, athletic performance and success. Research shows that grateful people are happier and more likely to maintain good friendships. A state of gratitude, according to research by the Institute of HeartMath, also improves the heart’s rhythmic functioning, which helps us to reduce stress, think more clearly under pressure and heal physically. It’s actually physiologically impossible to be stressed and thankful (or hateful and grateful) at the same time. When you are grateful you flood your body and brain with emotions and endorphins that uplift and energize you rather than with the stress hormones that drain you.
Gratitude and appreciation are also essential for a healthy work environment. In fact, the number one reason why people leave their jobs is because they don’t feel appreciated. A simple thank you and a show of appreciation can make all the difference.
Gratitude is like muscle. The more we use it the stronger it gets. In this spirit here are 4 ways to practice Thanksgiving every day of the year.
1. Take a Daily Thank You Walk – I mentioned this in The Energy Bus and The Positive Dog. Take a simple 10-minute walk each day and say out loud what you are thankful for. This will set you up for a positive day.
2. Meal Time Thank You’s – At meals with your friends and family, go around the table and have each person, including the kids at the little table, say what they are thankful for.
3. Gratitude Visit – Martin Seligman, Ph.D., the father of positive psychology, suggests that we write a letter expressing our gratitude to someone. Then we visit this person and read them the letter. His research shows that people who do this are measurably happier and less depressed a month later.
4. Say Thank You at Work – When Doug Conant was the CEO of Campbell Soup he wrote approximately 30,000 thank you notes to his employees and energized the company in the process. Energize and engage your co-workers and team by letting them know you are grateful for them and their work. Organizations spend billions of dollars collectively on recognition programs but the best and cheapest recognition program of all consists of a sincere THANK YOU. And of course don’t forget to say thank you to your clients and customers too.
Thank you for allowing me to share these gems with you. I’m thankful for YOU.
Luck is when preparation meets opportunity, so here’s to creating your own luck…

20 Unreal Places
“Your purpose in life is tofind your purpose and give your whole heart and soul to it.”–Gautama Buddha
Like many of you, I am firmly committed to working with and on purpose. This requires setting the right intention, paying attention, and cultivating the right attitude.
When we connect with people whose purpose is clear, their work blossoms forth and becomes an expression of their love and energy- and they make it all seem so unreal.
How do they do it?
Here are Ten Principles of Working on Purpose that might help the rest of us Manifest our Destiny…
The Japanese General Nobunaga decided to attack even though he had only one soldier to the enemy’s ten. He was sure he would win, but his soldiers were full of fear.
On the way to battle they stopped at a Shinto shrine. After praying in the shrine Nobunaga came out and said, “I shall now toss a coin. If it is heads, we shall win. If tails, we shall lose. Destiny will now reveal herself.”
He tossed the coin, it was heads.
The soldiers were so keyed up for the fight that they wiped out the enemy.
The next day an aide said to Nobunaga, “No one can change Destiny.”
“Right,” said General Nobunaga showing him a doubled coin that was heads on both sides.
Who Manifests YOUR Destiny?

Don’t Stop Believing by Robin Sharma:
This past weekend I watched a pretty inspiring documentary that I’d recommend to you so you round out 2013 in fine form.
It’s called Don’t Stop Believing. And it’s all about a poor kid from the Philippines who made his wildest dreams come true. Here’s the backstory…A few years ago the ’80s supergroup Journey was looking for a new lead singer after legendary vocalist Steve Perry left the band. The guitar player Neil Schon spent weeks surfing the Net hoping to find someone to at least get them through the big tour they’d planned. He watched video after video but no one even came close to the mastery they needed to forge ahead.
Late one night, seriously ready to give up, Schon went onto YouTube. He happened to see a video by a young man named Arnel Pineda who was singing Journey hits, belting them out like his life depended on it.
Pineda had experienced a rough ride:–His mother died of heart disease when he was just 13 years old.
–The family couldn’t afford rent so he lived in the streets.
–He worked odd jobs and often suffered from hunger.
–He was close to giving up on his career as a vocalist.
Mesmerized by the performance on YouTube, Schon sent an email to Pineda’s friend who had posted the video. His friend thought it was a joke. But then Schon followed up a little later with a personal call to the singer, inviting him to an audition in Marin County, California.Pineda was speechless. The first day of the audition was a mess. Pineda was jet-lagged, disoriented and outright scared to be singing in front of his heroes. The next day was a bit better. Something shifted. The members of journey thought maybe Schon was actually onto something as Pineda stepped up his game. The kid was pretty good.Day 3 magic filled the studio. The musicians were blown away by what they heard. And Journey offered Pineda a chance to go out on tour with them.
Get this…
…Arnel Pineda’s first performance was at a concert in Chile that was televised to 25,000,000 people.
In the documentary Pineda said that the stress was so severe before he went on stage that he lost his balance and everything seemed to be in slow motion. But as you know so well, what makes mastery is not being fearless but experiencing your natural fear and doing what needs to be done anyway.Within minutes of being in front of that audience, Pineda started having fun. He stopped being scared. And he proceeded to rock the house.Through the tour, his humility, work ethic, willingness to learn and passion to win wowed the members of Journey.
At the end of it, Pineda fully expected to be thanked. And then to return home, satisfied that he’d lived his dream.
But his band mates had another plan in mind…they offered him a permanent role as Journey’s lead singer. He became a full member of the legendary group (80 million records sold) and would receive 1/5 of all profit–exactly like the others. (Yes, the world has lots of decent, generous and good people in it).
Pineda continues to tour the world with Journey and has recorded a number of successful records with them. He has bought a home for his family, become a famous rock star and lives a life he never could have imagined. The lesson for us: don’t stop believing. Ever….The impossible is generally the untried.
Sending you a ton of best wishes…Your partner in success,

Dreamt up by Leonardo da Vinci, then manifested 500 years later: This amazing instrument combining a piano and cello has finally been played to an audience more than 500 years after it was imagined by the master. Da Vinci, the Italian Renaissance genius who painted the Mona Lisa, invented the ‘‘viola organista’’ – which looks like a baby grand piano – but never built it, experts say. The viola organista has now come to life, thanks to a Polish concert pianist with a flair for instrument-making and the patience and passion to interpret da Vinci’s plans…http://www.theage.com.au/entertainment/music/leonardo-da-vincis-wacky-piano-is-heard-for-the-first-time-after-500-years-20131118-2xpqs.html

Our system for checking and double checking projects before we go to print (or live online) helps us avoid errors—like typos.
But, what do you do when one accidentally slips by? There are many ways to handle it.
You could cry. You could jump up and down angrily and yell.
Or, you could create an awesome sticker admitting to your mistake, but letting people know the environment is more important to you than your pride. That’s what Stone Brewing Co. did…
